Murrihy Looking Forward To Tipperary Challenge In All-Ireland Quarter-Final

Clare ladies football manager James Murrihy makes no secret of the fact that a massive test awaits his side as they make their latest bid for All-Ireland intermediate glory. They are set to cross swords with old rivals Tipperary this weekend where the 2019 season will come to an end for one of them. These sides have plenty recent history to draw on with Clare’s last victory in the All-Ireland series against the Premier coming back in 2016 when they were victorious at the semi-final stage. Since then, Tipperary have gone to win the intermediate championship before dropping back down after one season in the top tier. They also made the step up to Division One of the National League and in recent weeks, they dethroned Clare to take the provincial title. Murrihy feels they will know plenty about each other. “It will be our fourth time playing them this year. We played them twice competitively in the Munster championship …

Eyes On The Prize As 2019 Clare SHC Race Heats Up

The 2019 race for the Canon Hamilton trophy gets underway this weekend. It is a date that players and supporters alike have been eyeing up since the inter-county action ground to a halt and from here until October, it will be going full pelt. 16 teams will set out with the goal of being crowned champions, and Ballyea are sitting on top of the pile with the Canon by their sides. Since the new structure was introduced to the Clare senior hurling championship, it has consistently thrown up brilliant ties, and this year’s first round is no exception. Ballyea start out against Clooney/Quin in a game that could well prove to be a shoot-out between county team-mates Tony Kelly and Peter Duggan. Newly crowned Clare Cup champions Kilmaley renew rivalries with an Eire Óg team who will be reeling from defeat at the quarter-final stage to the same opposition last year. Clonlara have to take on an O’Callaghan’s Mills outfit …

Ballyea Last two years: After a fairytale 2016 that only came to an end in Croke Park, Ballyea’s grip on the Canon was loosened by Newmarket in 2017 at the quarter-final stage. They reclaimed their prize in some style in 2018, as they blitzed Cratloe in the second-half of the county final to make it two wins in three years. Players out: Pearse Lillis (travel), Joe Neylon (broken hand), James Murphy (shoulder injury). Key men: Where do you start? Take your pick from Tony Kelly, Gary Brennan, Niall Deasy, Paul Flanagan, Martin O’Leary, Cillian Brennan or any of the others who will line out. Brandon O’Connell could be the one to watch out for after an impressive 2018. Manager: Kevin Sheehan What they said: “In 2017 after coming through a full winter playing, I …

Clare And Tipperary Set For Titanic Showdown In All-Ireland LGFA IFC Quarter-Final

Clare and Tipperary go head to head this weekend in the All-Ireland ladies intermediate football quarter-final. The Munster rivals are clashing for the second time in this year’s championship campaign with the Premier coming out on top when they met in the provincial decider. Tipperary blazed through group two of the intermediate championship with three wins from three, while Clare’s win over Laois was enough to see them through to the knockout stages. With a huge challenge ahead, Clare captain Laurie Ryan feels it is one that the whole squad are looking forward to. “It is a game that we might have expected coming down the tracks given how other results were panning out but now it is confirmed and we are focused on it. They are a really top class team and we will have to be at our best for going up against them and hopefully try to make up for that Munster final loss. We know how …

Kilmaley Clinch Clare Cup Title

Clare Cup Final: Kilmaley 1-26 Inagh-Kilnamona 0-14 It had the makings of a rip-roaring contest but by the time Ken Kennedy slammed home the only goal of the game, the result was long since decided. A second-half which saw Kilmaley outscore the Combo by 1-13 to 0-5 summed up the non-event nature of the game as a much slicker and committed outfit end a wait of 18 years without the Clare Cup title. A scoring spread of ten different names along with a strong bench also greatly aided their cause. It was the first senior silverware of any description for Kilmaley since the championship was last annexed in 2004 and on this form they will be certainly be in the reckoning to end that drought too. John Carmody will not allow his troops to read too much into this though as the real test of championship awaits this weekend when Eire Óg are the opponents. The Combo were forced to …

Neighbours Set For Titanic Battle In Clare Cup Final

It will be a clash of neighbours when these two go head to head for the first major hurling honours of 2019. For Kilmaley, it would be a third title to follow up their successes in 1981 and 2001 while the Combo go in search of their maiden crown. Both sides were impressive in reaching this stage with Kilmaley topping the group standings, just one point clear of their nearest rivals. Kilmaley have suffered just one loss this year, with that reversal coming early on against Clonlara on the same weekend that they had annexed the U-21 A crown. The Combo suffered two defeats en route to the decider, including a 3-16 to 0-13 loss against Kilmaley on the last weekend of May when both sides lined out without their county contingent. That result will have little or no bearing on this weekend’s showdown as both squads are in a much different gear now with championship on the horizon. This …

Kilmaley Hoping To Continue Push For Silverware

Conor Cleary is no stranger to lining out in finals for Kilmaley. It could even be argued that the Miltown Malbay native already has something of a storied history on big days for the club. His sideline cut to win the Minor A title against Clarecastle is still being spoken about while he was also the captain when they went on to win the U-21 title for just their second time in 2015. He went on to play a pivotal role as the club fought back from relegation to win the Clare intermediate title before going on to contest the Munster final with that one ending in the narrowest of defeats. 2018 saw them lose out in the Clare Cup final to Newmarket but now John Carmody’s side have a chance to make amends when they square off with neighbours Inagh-Kilnamona. The county star is hopeful they come out on the right side of the result. “The last few years …

Inagh-Kilnamona Bidding For Maiden Clare Cup Title

Inagh-Kilnamona are just 60 minutes away from claiming the first senior silverware in the club’s history when they take on Kilmaley in this weekend’s Clare Cup final. The last decade has seen steady progress for the Combo since their decision to join under the one banner and a plethora of underage titles have been accrued in recent years. That success is starting to now filter through to senior level and manager Fergal Hegarty is pleased with 2019 has played out so far. “We just wanted to try and do as well as we could in the cup games and give some of the younger lads game time. We have reached the final now and that is really an added bonus. Everyone starts off the year looking at the championship but we have used the Clare Cup pretty well and we are happy to be in the position that we find ourselves in now. We have introduced some of the younger …

Division Three And Division Four League Football Titles On The Line

There are two more football league titles up for grabs this weekend. Division Three Football Final Preview: Shannon Gaels v Kilrush With promotion to the Garry Cup already secured for both these sides, silverware is the bonus prize on offer as the starting line for the championship starts to move into clear focus. It is the intermediate side who topped the Division Three standings with Shannon Gaels taking down their senior opponents by the minimum when they met in the final round. The result put the Gaels straight into the final and sent Kilrush head-first into a semi-final showdown with Naomh Eoin. That proved to be a contest which went all the way before the Shams left Cross with the win, and that more recent experience could prove crucial in this tie. The availability in recent weeks of county duo Gearoid O’Brien and Stephen Ryan will be a major bonus for Kilrush, and they will want to hit the ground …

Garry Appointed Manager Of Naomh Eoin / O’Curry’s For 2019 Clare SFC

The final management team for the 2019 Clare senior football championship has been confirmed. Former Clare minor and U-21 manager Joe Garry has been appointed to take charge of the Naomh Eoin-O’Curry’s group team. The Cooraclare clubman previously led the Banner to victory over Kerry in the Munster U-21 championship in 2007 and was part of the Sky Blue’s side that won Jack Daly in 1997. He is joined on the backroom team by Kilkee native Dermot Galvin, who is also part of the O’Curry’s management for their intermediate campaign. It’s understood that at least one more high-profile name will be added to the management set-up before the championship. The pensinsula based side are drawn in Group One for the senior championship where they will take on defending champions St Joseph’s Miltown along with the two most recent intermediate champions in the form of Kilrush and Kilmihil.

Clubs Vote To Postpone Start Of Clare U21 Club Football Championships

No definitive date has been agreed for the commencement of the Clare U-21 football club championships. A special meeting was held last week with the clubs involved and the majority voiced their opposition to starting the championship this weekend, which was the provisional date start date set out in the 2019 Master Fixtures. This led to a county board meeting being called in order to vote on changing the Master Fixtures and all bar one of the votes on the evening were in favour of deferring the start date to the first available date. Meanwhile the draws were made last Monday evening for this year’s U-21 football championship. The only preliminary round tie in the U-21A championship sees Ennistymon taking on Kilmurry Ibrickane with the winners going on to face Kilrush/Killimer in the quarter-finals. The other three quarter-final ties are St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield v St Breckan’s, Eire Óg v Cooraclare and Naomh Eoin/O’Curry’s/Kilkee going up against Kilmihil/Shannon Gaels. The U-21B …

Miltown Claim Cusack Cup Title

Cusack Cup Final: St Joseph’s Miltown 1-4 Clondegad 0-6 There are a few clichés that could sum up this game. A game of two halves, not exactly one for the purists, and a tale of goals winning matches could all come close to summing it up. In reality, it was all about the side that made the most of their scoring chances and in that respect Miltown were full value for their narrow win. On a day when torrential rain swept across the field for the majority of the contest, it meant handling conditions were far from ideal and scoring chances were at a premium. It also meant that the side who kept their goals intact would take a big step toward victory, and two brilliant stops by Miltown net-minder Sean O’Brien were match winning moments in this contest. County team-mates Gary Brennan and Gordon Kelly had a brilliant battle right throughout the game while Cillian Brennan was tasked with …

Inagh/Kilnamona And Sixmilebridge Vying For Clare Cup Final Spot

The line up for this year’s Clare Cup final will be completed this weekend. Clare Cup Semi-Final: Inagh/Kilnamona v Sixmilebridge (Saturday in Tulla at 4pm) Two of the powerhouses of Clare hurling face off this weekend to try and secure their place in the Clare Cup final. The sides met each other in Round 1 of the competition and Inagh-Kilnamona were victorious. Much water has passed under the bridge since then and indeed Sixmilebridge have gained ground on their rivals since the first week, with both sides finishing with the exact same amount of points, wins, losses and draws. It promises to be a very tight encounter, with both sides welcoming back returning county players and holidaying players, as the championship fast approaches and the intensity is likely to be more akin to championship pace. Speaking to The Clare Champion, Inagh-Kilnamona manager Fergal Hegarty believes that clubs are hitting their peak after the group stage of the Clare Cup. “The …

Kilmaley And Broadford Set For Clare Cup Semi-Final Showdown

The line-up for this year’s Clare Cup final will be completed this weekend with both last four ties down for decision. Clare Cup Semi-Final: Kilmaley v Broadford (Saturday at 2pm in Newmarket) Kilmaley and Broadford go head to head this weekend for a place in the 2019 Clare Cup Final with both sides enjoying a strong run of form coming into the game. Kilmaley finished top of Division 1A to seal their place in the last four with John Carmody’s charges losing just one of their nine group stage games. That reversal came in their second round tie against Clonlara, meaning Kilmaley are now seven games undefeated ahead of their showdown with the south-east Clare men. Manager John Carmody is happy with how his squad are progressing so far in 2019. “We are pleased with the league campaign and finishing top of Division 1A showed a level of consistency and we have the benefit now of a bonus game as …

‘Fix the one percents and you’ll reach the magical one hundred’ – Hogg

2023 All Ireland Junior winner Sinead Hogg is a mainstay at the heart of the Clon defence and after a monumental battle with Eimear Bourke and Cait Devane she is ready to push on and claim the biggest camogie prize in Munster. ” Today wasn’t easy and the body is sore. It was a serious battle and in fairness to both teams it was a war of attrition. We had to just try and stay in the game at different stages because their six forwards are unbelievable players and can hurt you in the blink of an eye. It’s great to have that half back line in front of you cutting out the supply which makes it a bit easier for us in the full back line though and I think we did quite well. We were fully focused on delivering not only a performance but delivering a result and thankfully we did both.” Sinead feels as a group they have …

‘I feel like I’m in a dream’ – Morris

Former coach to the Clare Senior set up and in his fourth year training his beloved Truagh-Clonlara Ryan Morris feels like he’s dreaming but admits this was their ultimate objective. ” I feel like I’m in a dream that I don’t want to wake up from. To see how far we’ve come from winning an Intermediate title to claiming a first ever McMahon Cup, going back to back and now a Munster final. It’s magical, it truly is. Last year we enjoyed celebrating after the County championship and the buzz around the place was incredible. The whole day out against Sarsfields was also really special but in truth we let the day be our focus and not the game itself. It wasn’t until we sat down to plan for this year that we felt the pain of that defeat. We set in motion a plan to retain our crown and have another crack at Munster but to do so we …

Controversy reigns as Tulla denied at death

Dr. Harty Cup Round 2 St Joseph’s Tulla 0-17 Cashel Community School 0-17 After an opening day defeat to Cork school Blackrock, the pressure was firmly on Tulla to deliver in Cappamore. Showing tremendous character against a quality Cashel side they managed to stay in the game throughout thanks to an outstanding defensive display by fullback Fionn O’Gara and a series of top drawer saves from Broadford’s Jack Lovett. It was the player affectionately known as ‘Fog’ though that towered above everyone else on the field and was quite simply majestic all afternoon. Decisive hooks, critical blocks and booming clearances were the order of the day from the Clooney-Quin player. When Cashel did manage to break through the Tulla rearguard, they met a wall of resistance in Lovett. On three occasions the netminder came to the rescue, firstly denying Briain O’Donoghue with a brave point blank save in the 15th minute, then thwarting corner-forward Ryan O’Sullivan just before the interval …

21st celebrations as Éire Óg return to helm

Clare Senior Football Championship Final Éire Óg 1-10 Kilmurry Ibrickane 0-6 “The Townies are back and we’re not going anywhere’ was the passionate concluding words to captain Aaron Fitzgerald’s speech as Éire Óg bounced back to Jack Daly winning ways in Cusack Park, writes Eoin Brennan.  Having only lost one of their last 21 matches and that to Cratloe in last year’s semi-final after penalties, the Ennis side’s third senior crown in four years was fully merited as they rolled with the punches of a difficult day weather and opposition-wise before finishing in powerful fashion. The ‘Bricks, fueled by an intriguing mix of youth and vast title winning experience, certainly made Paul Madden’s side sweat after hitting the ground running with the first three points through Keenan Sexton (2) and Daryn Callinan. However, on a day in which they almost needed a perfect performance, crucially they coughed up possession at halfway for Mark McInerney to pick out Gavin Cooney for …

Strong Ennis performance seals win over Cobh Pirates RFC

Senior Men’s Junior League 2: Ennis RFC 26 – 6 Cobh Pirates RFC The Ennis Senior men’s rugby team were victorious 26 – 6 over Cobh Pirates during the Junior League 2. Ennis started off with a strong scrum, followed by Dylan Kenny breaking through tackles to score a converted score under the posts. Ennis’ defence stood firm and soon Joey Keane managed a huge steal with the Cobh Pirates just short of the try line. At the end of the first-half, the opposition scored a penalty, bringing the half-time score to 7 – 3. At the start of the second-half, the Cobh Pirates scored another penalty. With the score at 7 – 6, Ennis increased their defence and attack, allowing Cian Guilfoyle to score Ennis’ second try. Brendan Keane scored their third try, converted by Kenny, after a dominant Ennis scrum. With the game almost over and the Cobh Pirates on the attack, Guilfoyle intercepted on the halfway line …

Meehan and McEvoy shine as Banner overcome Wolfe Tones

Junior C camogie final Banner 1-9 Wolfe Tones 0-9 Novel could best describe this meeting on Saturday afternoon last between Wolfe Tones and Banner in the Junior C camogie final that drew a sizable attendance to Father McNamara park.  Wolfe Tones with an experienced group of players faced up to a youthful Banner side with many dual players. Both sides had freetakers of a standard far higher than Junior C as Ciara Meehan and Sarah McEvoy shared a dozen scores over the hour. Wolfe Tones netminder Anna Brennan retired injured after 15 minutes as the Shannon side started slowly and didn’t score until the 17th minute from McEvoy with Laura Meaney adding a second Tones scores a minute later. Two further scores from Wolfe Tones in the final minutes of the half left them on four points, one behind Banner at the interval. Ciara Meehan was excellent from placed balls and missed just one over the hour. Half-time Banner (0-5) …

Whelan and Meaney score as Clondegad lower Banner

Junior B football final Clodegad 2-11 Banner 2-8 A season of underachieving in the view of both clubs in the Intermediate championship came to an adult end in Lissycasey on Sunday afternoon in the Junior B county final decider. As with most Junior finals it can be a hazardous task to allocate a favourites tag so all was up for grabs before what was a disappointing following from the two clubs. Scores were hard to come by the opening quarter with the two sides sharing a paltry five points as Clondegad led (0-3) to (0-2) before Ciaran Connelly struck for the first of four goals in the game. Within two minutes Banner had cut the lead of Clondegad to the minimum with their first goal as long time performer Fiachra Hayes who started in place of William Bello was their shooter. Clondegad full forward Oisin Griffin won a high ball and his breaking ball was doubled to the net by …

Éire Óg Fawle as Kevin’s goal seals final place

Junior A football semi-final Michael Cusacks 1-9 Éire Óg 0-8 Renowned Michael Cusack’s defender Kevin Fawle is not recognised as a goalscorer but should ultimate success come the way of the men from the Burren and Belharbour they will look back at Fawle’s 50th minute goal as one of the decisive moments of the year. Éire Óg will have left Corofin with deep regrets posting perhaps their least effective showing of the season that was well below their quarter-final showing against Cooraclare as Michael Cusack’s were very fortunate to get extra time before dispatching the challenge of St Breckan’s second string. Éire Óg opened the scoring with goalkeeper Cian Howard kicking over their first score from a free and he added a second free after eight minutes. Domhnall McMahon operating at full forward with others pulled out kicked over Michael Cusack’s first score just before Jack McGann and McMahon once more were on the scoresheet after 13 minutes to take the …

Flynn and Duggan goals keep St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield senior as the ‘Bridge drop down

Senior camogie relegation final St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield 2-9 Sixmilebridge 1-10 There was heartbreak for Sixmilebridge and jubilation for St Joseph’s in equal measure in Clooney on Saturday afternoon. Relegation to Intermediate camogie for the Bridge who in a bygone era won multiple championships as St Joseph’ chasing their first maintained their status and once more are the only Clare club to possess four senior GAA, Camogie and LGFA sides. With the LGFA county final on the horizon for St Joseph’s they did not want a low note to be played in the run up with relegation from senior camogie and set out their stall early with (2-2) in the opening half with Ciara Duggan and Siobhan Flynn scoring (1-1 each). Chloe Morey hit back between the 14th and 18th minutes with (1-2) to keep Sixmilebridge in contact as Olivia Phelan had initiated the scoring for Sixmilebridge after four minutes. Determined tackling by both sets of defenders ensured a low scoring contest as …

Tulla fall to Harty Cup opening round loss

Blackwater Community School, Lismore 2-16 St. Joseph’s Tulla 0-20 St Joseph’s Secondary School, Tulla suffered an agonising two-point reverse in their Harty Cup Group 3 campaign on Wednesday afternoon. The defat, at the hands of a pacy Blackwater Community School from Lismore, leaves them under pressure to advance to the knockout stages. For all that Tulla did well in this contest, a sloppy start proved detrimental to their chances in Kilmallock, falling eight points behind inside the opening quarter. It was a position that the students, coached by Terence Fahy, Aidan Harte and Tomás Kelly couldn’t recover from fully. Even when they were on top and looked like taking the lead, they were hit with a sucker punch of a goal that filled the Lismore confidence heading into the second half. Indeed, a stunning save from Billy Murphy in the Lismore goal denied them a potential game changing goal, with Darragh White having to settle for a point instead. The …

A qualified personal trainer and fitness instructor, Shine was part of former Manager Wayne Freeman’s Backroom Team last year so he knows the panel of players involved here to date. He has …

Banner five still alive in Munster Junior Football PPS Championships

Clare’s interest in the Munster Junior (Under 17) Post-Primary Schools Football Championships have been reduced to five after a busy week of derbies in all five grades. The Frewen Cup is destined to return to Kerry for another year after St Flannan’s College bowed out at the quarter-final stage to St Michael’s Listowel by 1-13 to 1-09 in The Bog Garden in Rathkeale on Wednesday afternoon. Trailing by 1-4 to 0-4 by the break, the Ennis College grabbed a lifeline on the restart when Kieran Doyle converted a penalty. With Dara Kennedy and TJ Moore dominating the engine room, Darragh …

Crusheen present double trouble for Parteen-Meelick

Junior A Camogie Championship Cup Final Crusheen v Parteen-Meelick at Fr McNamara Park Ennis, Saturday at 4pm (Kevin Walsh, Wolfe Tones) Momentum is the clear driving force as heavyweights Crusheen and Parteen-Meelick finally meet in earnest to decide the Junior A Camogie Championship honours. I say finally as they were forced into a dress rehearsal final group decider a fortnight ago but as expected it was merely a shadow-boxing exercise especially on the red half of the divide as Parteen-Meelick eased to a 9-27 to 0-07 win. Don’t expect the same in Fr. McNamara Park on Saturday afternoon as Crusheen, off the back of their commanding Junior A Ladies Football Final triumph over Cúil Gaels last Sunday will be determined to achieve a historic double. Parteen-Meelick were pencilled in for a ladies football final too last Saturday but being a Junior B Shield Final, they opted to put their full focus on this prestigious decider. There’s no shortage of camogie …

Clancy crushes Cúil dreams of silverware

Junior A Ladies’ Football Final Crusheen 3-10 – Cúil Gaels 0-14 Crusheen back at the start of the century under the management of the late Michael Cullinan possessed some of the best underage players in the county winning four Under 16A titles plus Minor, Junior A and Intermediate honours finally contested a senior final joined with Kilmihil. Time moved on, players left and lean times followed but once more Crusheen are back in the Intermediate championship for 2025 following a five-point success over Cúil Gaels in Lissycasey on Sunday evening. Cúil Gaels for their part had ample scoring chances over the course of the hour and really worried Crusheen but unfortunately from the estuary’s perspective they kicked a dozen wides as opposed to just five for the title winners. At least four of the Cúil Gael points skimmed the Crusheen crossbar much to the relief of Grace Gleeson. Yet, the matchwinner was at midfield for Crusheen, namely Anna Clancy with …

Shannon Town shade cup spoils in low-key derby

(FAI Junior Cup) Shannon Town A 2 – Bunratty/Cratloe 1 Shannon Town inched the derby spoils to book their place in the next round of the FAI Junior Cup but it wasn’t the greatest of advertisements for an early morning kick-off in Lynch Park in Shannon on Sunday. Don’t get me wrong, all the ingredients were ripe for a memorable derby as a sizeable crowd was in attendance to witness a rare clash of these neighbours while there was the added layer of new Shannon Town manager Davy Hogan playing against his former Premier winning club. However, perhaps the players weren’t given sufficient notice of the 10:30am kick-off as the teams never really livened up until the final quarter. Amazingly, there wasn’t a shot of note throughout the entire opening period and essentially it was only with Charlie Morrison’s 68th minute penalty that this prudent tie finally opened up. It was a huge relief to hosts Shannon Town who, as …
