A SHANNON model has been the victim of some vicious online commentary, but Celia Holman Lee, whose modelling agency she is associated with, says the youngster is dusting herself off and won’t let it get to her too much. Miss Limerick World Shauna Lindsay has seen a number of severe comments that were posted about her reproduced in the media this week. Speaking about the incident, Ms Holman Lee said the teenager is getting on with things. “Of course I didn’t see it (the online remarks), I only heard it and I’m only going by what her family have been telling me. She’s ignoring all of that but it hurt her a tremendous amount, of course it hurt her. Through no fault at all of her own, she became the victim but she’s doing fine; she’s a good girl, a strong girl and she’s doing fine. SHANNON Airport’s most popular passengers on New Year’s Day were All-Ireland Champions Clare as some dedicated fans turned up to wish them bon voyage on their  team holiday to the US and Mexico. Some 300 Banner supporters grabbed photos and autographs as the 80 strong party arrived  for the 1.30 p.m. departure to Cancun, Mexico, via Boston. Manager Davy Fitzgerald, with McCarthy Cup in hand, was first to walk through the doors and, more than three months after they claimed the county’s fourth All-Ireland title, was still immediately besieged by young Clare fans eager to get their photograph taken with him. Fitzgerald ensured his young charges were at Shannon early to ensure no fan was left disappointed. SHANNON Christian Church are applying for planning permission for a place of worship in one of the town’s hubs of industry. The West of Ireland Evangelical Trust, which they are part of, has lodged the application for a change of use at an existing industrial premises in the Smithstown Industrial Estate. They wish to change the use of one building from commercial to a church which include reception meeting rooms, an assembly area and associated site works. The application states that the church is already occupying pending planning permission. There are already 59 parking spaces at the site and the application says that the church would operated from 9am to 10pm. AERCAP, a Dutch company which employs 50 people in Shannon, is about to complete the acquisition of International Lease Finance Corporation and plans to re-domicile billions of euro worth of assets to Ireland. The company, when contacted on Wednesday, wasn’t in a position to say how the move would impact on its Shannon operations. When the separation of Shannon from the Dublin Airport Authority was announced last December, it was predicted that 3,000 to 5,000 jobs would be created within five years in aviation related industries. On Tuesday, Patrick Edmond, director of Group Strategy for Shannon and managing director of the Shannon International Aviation Services Centre, tweeted a link to a news story on the plans to re-domicile the ILFC fleet to Ireland, which is understood to include 1,000 planes. He also tweeted a correction regarding another news story, which stated that Aercap is Dublin-based rather than Shannon-based.   SHANNON turned into a Christmas haven over the weekend for  4,500  children, who experienced a trip of a lifetime, a meeting with Santa 15,000 feet above sea level. Shannon Airport and Ryanair teamed up to put on free flights for the children, with the same number also due to fly out next weekend. Before take-off, the children were entertained in the terminal building. Operation Santa,  which had 10% of seats reserved for children with special needs from the region, marks a new deal between the airline and Shannon for 18 destinations next year, dramatically extending connectivity options for airport users.

THERE is a very large demand for social housing in Shannon, this week’s meeting of the town council heard, while some of the members said there is a need for new development in the town. Councillor Cathy McCafferty put forward a motion asking for information on the number of applicants and their dependants on the waiting list; the total number of vacant houses in Shannon returned to use this year, the total number of vacant houses in the town, the average time between the council acquiring a vacant house until it is let once again and the number of social houses retrofitted for energy efficiency in Shannon this year. In a written reply, Liam O’Connor of the county council’s housing section stated there are 303 approved applicants for social housing support who have Shannon as their first preference. PEOPLE in Shannon who were already concerned about public health, due to foul odours plaguing the town, had their fears heightened on Sunday as emergency services, including bomb disposal officers, transported materials from Enva in Smithstown to Bunratty for disposal. The incident took place shortly after 7am on Sunday morning, and a garda spokesman confirmed to The Clare Champion that roads had to be closed for a short period of time to allow the material to be moved. According to the spokesman, there were about five or six barrels of material of concern to be moved. He said two army trucks, two fire brigades, two garda cars and some ambulances travelled in convoy. The Clare Champion approached Enva for comment on the matter but calls had not been returned at the time of writing.
