AN Ennis man who has been held at gunpoint by Israeli soldiers in Hebron, witnessing first hand what it is like for those living in Palestine, is among the organisers of a protest by EU civil servants in Brussels calling out the “inaction” of the bloc. Manus Carlisle, who grew up in Roslevan, and describes himself as a “proud Clare man” is an organiser of the ‘EU Staff for Peace & Justice’ campaign in Brussels. The campaign is made up of a large group of EU civil servants “who have been horrified by the violence taking place in Palestine and the inaction of the European Union in the face of the violence”, he explains. The group have collected over 1,700 signatures from EU civil servants expressing their growing concern over the ongoing crisis in Gaza. THE death has occurred at Mowlam Nursing Home in Ennis of Pat Cleary of Hazelgrove, Roslevan who was the advertising manager at The Clare Champion for many years. A native of Kilmihil, Pat travelled the world before he settled in Wales and became involved in the newspaper industry.  He was the advertising manager in charge of several titles there before returning to Clare. Pat was appointed to the ‘Champion by the then owner, the late Flan Galvin. This was a particularly challenging time for the paper, when new technology and an expanding workforce led to the ‘Champion becoming one of the dominant players among regional newspapers. This meant keeping ahead of the curve on all aspects of the business and Pat was very much a part of that. EVERY day many dogs are walked on the Tulla Road in Ennis but if you are in the vicinity, you might also be lucky enough to see Lucy, a micro Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pig, as she is brought on her regular treks. Lucy is the pet of local couple Mark Greene and Sarah Jane Germaine, who live just off the main road in Gort na Habhna. When The Clare Champion visited their house on Tuesday, Lucy was relaxing comfortably in the sitting room, alongside one of the couple’s two dogs. Just two-years-old now, Lucy weighs an estimated 160 pounds and is surely one of the biggest and most unusual pets in Ennis. “I wouldn’t say there’s another one in the town. Not one that gets walked around the place and definitely not one that lives in the sitting room!” says Mark. Two boys, both aged 15, who were swimming at a quarry in Ennis have died at University Hospital Limerick. It is understood that the two teenagers got into difficulty at a disused quarry near Knockanean in the town today [Thursday]. Both boys were recovered by the Coastguard helicopter shortly after 3.30pm, after gardai were notified that people were in difficulty in the water, at Knockanean quarry lake and assistance was required. They were airlifted to University Hospital Limerick but this evening news has emerged that both have been pronounced deceased. Both are believed to be from Ennis. Their names will not be released until family members have been notified. It is understood that the teenagers were due to sit their junior certificate examinations on Wednesday.

Gardaí have confirmed that the Coastguard helicopter has recovered two teenagers who got into difficulty swimming in the quarry at Roslevan. The condition of the two boys is not yet known but they have both been taken to University Hospital Limerick. The incident occurred at approximately 4pm today. The Coastguard helicopter was deployed to deal with the situation and the two teenagers were retrieved from the water.  

JUST a few years ago, ghost estates were one of the oft discussed items in current affairs but the tide has turned, with high rents and lack of houses now a more prominent feature. With this changed environment, a planning application has been lodged for a 42-unit housing development in Roslevan, Ennis. If it is to go ahead, it would be one of the only such developments be built in the area for some years. Michael and JJ Fahy have made the application for the development. It consists of eight three-bedroom ground floor apartments, eight four-bedroom duplex apartments, and 26 three-bedroom houses. The site in question is 1.78 hectares in size and the gross floor space of the works will be 4981.64m². Some 107 car parking spaces will also be provided. There is “great excitement” around O’Keeffe’s Shop in Roslevan, Ennis today after last night’s €5.3 million single or syndicate National Lottery winner purchased their ticket in the shop. The lucky €7.50 quick-pick ticket was purchased yesterday in the shop and the place has been a hive of activity ever since. Speaking to The Clare Champion on Thursday owner Thomas O’Keeffe said the shop had been very busy all day with a multitude of local people coming into the shop to check their tickets. “It’s absolutely brillant, there’s been great excitement and a real buzz around here all morning, it’s been unreal,” he said. “The Lotto machine hasn’t stopped.” Mr O’Keeffe said the shop has enjoyed a lot of luck in the past with an Ennis man winning €500,000 on a Winning Streak ticket last year. A LOCAL  group, who have been bringing potentially life saving defibrillators to the streets of Ennis, have just installed their fourth device. The Ennis Defibrillator Committee is behind the installation of a new defibrillator at Roslevan this week. And there are plans to provide four more in the future with a fundraising quiz planned for next Thursday in the West County Hotel. According to the fundraising committee chairman Paul O’Shea, “Each defibrillator costs €2,300 and the committee have raised enough money to purchase four units. These units are positioned at key locations throughout Ennis. We can’t believe that in these hard times, that we have now purchased four units. The generosity of the Clare public is astounding. In addition, Ennis is in the process of achieving the status of ‘Heart Safe Town’ the much coveted award from the Irish Heart Foundation.” The fund raising committee includes the Clare Red Cross, Ennis Chamber, Avondale Soccer club and other businesses/community groups.
