A new colourful eye catching piece of artwork on the side wall of Liam O’Rian’s Pub in Ballina featuring local images, has generated a lot of interest from locals and tourists. The mural depicts local landmarks such as Brian Boru’s Fort, St Flannan’s Cathedral, Killaloe Bridge, the Lakeside Hotel, Killaloe train station and Ardnacrusha Hydroelectric Power Station, which resulted in a lot of changes in the river landscape after the construction of the Shannon Scheme. Ms Acheson enjoyed creating an interesting water spiral shape with buildings around it and a constant flow from the sky to the hills, lake and river. “I did all the buildings in black and white and nature in crazy colours to ensure nature wouldn’t get lost in the overall image. This also provides a bit of a contrast,” she said. The centre image in the mural shows a turbine under construction during the building of Ardnacrusha Hydro Electric Power Station in the late 1920s. A LARGE bottle cap mural has been installed at Kilnaboy National School, the result of much work from the whole school community. Teacher Fiona Corry Forde drove the project, and she said the mural reflects the Burren’s landscape, which she said is important to the school. “Traditionally the children would always learn a lot about their own local environment and we take part in the Burren Beo programme as often as it comes around.” The mural is 14.3 metres by 3.5 metres and she explained where the idea came from. “Basically it came about because this time last year I heard an interview with a principal down in County Cork, in a school called Ballymoney, down near Clonakilty. She was interviewed by Kathryn Thomas about a bottlecap mural they had done. I googled pictures of it and I thought that’s fabulous and I’d love to have a go at it with the kids in Kilnaboy.” School principal Gerry Connors was …

A work of art in Ennis is being “defaced and disrespected” by being used as a location for storing commercial bins, it has been claimed. The mural artwork is situated close to the Friary and the tourist office and depicts a woman surrounded by colourful butterflies. However, the mural is being obscured by bins regularly being left in front. The location of commercial bins is something that has been of concern to both businesses in Ennis and the local authority in recent years. Plans are now underway by Clare County Council to remove commercial bins from the town centre, apart from collection times, which they say will deal with the blocking of the mural. A concerned member of the public, who contacted The Clare Champion, said, “I recently read about the vandalism of the work of art on Barrack Street and that there was outcry locally about what had been done. That was a terrible act of vandalism but, equally, …

THE Ché Guevara mural saga has taken yet another turn in Kilkee with retired pharmacist and former Kilkee Chamber secretary, John Williams, claiming the resort town is in the throes of rebellion. One complete and a second partially complete mural of Ché Guevara have been painted on the side of privately owned property in the town in recent days. This follows Clare County Council’s decision to remove a 20ft-high mural of the famous Argentine revolutionary from a ball alley wall at the West End of Kilkee beach last week. The image of Ché Guevara was part of the publicity for the annual Ché do Bheatha Festival in the town. The removal of that mural has led to an upsurge in mural creations in recent days. “It’s a rebellion after the high-handed way the council treated the town. It’s a rebellion as befits Ché Guevara,” a furious Mr Williams told The Clare Champion on Wednesday. He predicts several images of the …
