Annual post-lockdown derby for the ‘Bricks and Miltown

Half a loaf is considerably better than no bread as following the postponement of last year’s secondary adult club competitions, a condensed county league schedule is set to commence this bank holiday Monday. Four of the seven football leagues begin their campaigns on the first day possible of the government’s Covid-19 guidelines, with all divisions in both football and hurling limited to five matches which are based on last year’s fixtures. With no promotion or relegation at stake, the county leagues are primarily intended as a reintroduction to playing action following a minimum eight month absence. However, while clubs will be without their inter-county contingents, there’s still silverware on offer to retain a competitive edge remains intact as following the completion of the group stages, the top team in each division will be crowned champions. Cusack Cup – Division 1 Football League Round 1 Kilmurry Ibrickane v St Joseph’s Miltown at Quilty, Monday, 3.30pm (Referee: C Maguire) It’s a post-lockdown …

Coolmeen face their biggest hour

THE entire parish of Coolmeen will decamp to Mallow on Sunday. This mass migration of householders from the 24 Cranny/Coolmeen townlands will be an albeit temporary arrangement but one that has become part of the fabric of the club’s glory-laden season. After their post-match warm-down in Cooraclare two weeks ago, having beaten Modeligo in the Munster semi-final, the Coolmeen players were met with a standing ovation from their community, who had stayed on to let them know how highly they rated their men. Coolmeen will need that support on Sunday because in Templenoe they will play the best team they have ever met. That’s not to suggest that the Kerry champions are unbeatable but they will be very warm favourites. In their Munster semi-final, they beat Bandon 0-16 to 1-10 in Clonakilty and a feature of that game was that five of the Cork club’s forwards did not score from play. Team captain Tadhg Morley excelled that day, while Kieran O’Neill …

Celebration time for Wolfe Tones and Coolmeen

Bonfires blazed across the parishes of Shannon and Coolmeen-Cranny on Saturday evening after Wolfe Tones and Coolmeen were crowned intermediate hurling and junior A football champions repectively. Goals proved decisive and Wolfe Tones won back senior status after a year in the lower division when they defeated Broadford at O’Garney Park in Sixmilebridge. Two goals in each half proved too much for Broadford who, despite scoring seventeen points, were five adrift when the final whistle sounded. The winners got off to a dream start with a Kevin McCafferty goal as early as the fourth minute. Broadford rallied and drew level by the thirteenth minute and they will be disappointed that they weren’t ahead at this point but poor shooting proved costly. Ahead by a point after twenty minutes the winners struck again and Jack Cunningham found the net, a score that helped them to a half time lead on the score of 2-4 to 0-7. The winners made the better …

Inchiquin Lake still out of bounds

While the drinking water restrictions which applied to Kildysart, Coolmeen, Corofin and Ruan were lifted over the weekend, there is disquiet in the North Clare area as Inchiquin Lake still remains out of bounds. Clare Council, in consultation with the HSE, said the lake, a huge amenity attraction, close to Corofin, “remains closed to the public as is not suitable for recreational purposes. Signage has been erected notifying the public of the ongoing closure at the lake.” On August 14, approximately 1800 customers were advised, as a precautionary measure, that water in Corofin town and its environs, Ruan village and the area served by the Killeen Group Water Scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the presence of an algal bloom in Inchiquin Lake. Clare County Council has explained how customers in the affected area are now being provided with an alternative supply via the Dysart-Toonagh Group Water Scheme and Ennis Public Water Supply Scheme. All water restrictions have been lifted as a …

Water restrictions lifted in Clare

CLARE County Council has confirmed the removal of drinking water restrictions which were affecting 3,300 customers in Kildysart, Coolmeen, Corofin and Ruan. The restrictions were in place in Kildysart and Coolmeen since July 29 and in Corofin and Ruan since August 14. Approximiately 1,500 customers of the Kildysart Public Water Supply scheme were advised as a precautionary measure that water on the scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the discolouration of the water caused by increased manganese levels. However, extensive testing of the water provided by the Kildysart Public Water Supply scheme has shown that the water being supplied continues to meet the drinking water standards. All water restrictions have been lifted as a result. In the middle of this month 1,800 customers were advised, as a precautionary measure, that water in Corofin town and its environs, Ruan village and the area served by the Killeen Group Water Scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the presence of an algal …

Kildysart water problems persist

Drinking water restrictions introduced on July 29th last for an estimated 1,500 customers of the Kildysart Public Water Supply and the Coolmeen Group Water Supply are to remain in place until at least this Friday. The HSE, in conjunction with Clare County Council and Irish Water, says that water on the schemes remains unsuitable for drinking, as a precautionary measure, due to the discolouration of the water caused by increased manganese levels in the public water supply. “At this stage the water quality has improved because of the ongoing modifications to the water treatment process. The general quality of the water is not yet at a satisfactory level and following further consultation with the HSE it is advised that the water is not suitable for drinking until further notice. “We are unable to determine when normal service will be resumed, but Irish Water and Clare County Council will continue to liaise with the HSE with a view to lifting drinking water restrictions as soon as practicable,” …

Melissa remembers Mike ‘Doctor’

MELISSA McMahon is planning to make a documentary about her grandfather, Mike McMahon from Cranny, who was better known as Mike Doctor. Melissa, who is from Ennis and is currently making a documentary on The Clare Champion forRaidió Corca Baiscinn in Kilkee , attributes her interest in the arts to her grandfather, although she was only five years old when he passed away. “As I grew up, I was told many stories about my grandfather’s love for poetry, theatre and people. His life as a farmer in West Clare ran parallel to his love for the arts. His creativity spanned decades and the older I got and the more my creative span grew, it became evident to me that my love for the theatre, writing poetry and immersing myself in the arts from a young age was a deep-rooted passion …
