Young Offenders star to launch Clare teen disco Saturday

IN CORK parlance, Billy Murphy might known a ‘scobe’, but Shane Casey, the actor who plays him in hit comedy Young Offenders, will be on his best behaviour when he visits North Clare at the weekend.

Shane shot to fame in the Cork-based comedy and became a cult hero after serenading a hijacked bus with a blistering cover of The Frank and Walter’s ‘After All’.

He will be in Lisdoonvarna on Saturday night (February 12) to officially launch the new teenage disco at The Hydro Hotel. The pandemic put a spanner in the works for the planned disco back in 2020 and organisers are thrilled that it’s all systems go.

“We are delighted that Shane was available for this launch –  we had to postpone this event in March, two years ago, when the pandemic hit – so we are delighted it’s back,” said Marcus White,

Managing Director of the Hydro. “There is a huge pent-up demand for teenage discos from young people who have really missed many important milestones in the past two years. I have no doubt that this lack of social interaction has been detrimental to their mental health.”

Mr White said the Young Offenders star will meet and greet teens and pose for photos.

The event is set to be the first of many teen discos planned for this year. Mr White stressed that it will be strictly supervised.

“It will be professionally supervised, with strictly no alcohol or illegal substances and will be for secondary students only,” he said.

On the decks on Saturday night will be Killian Murphy, a club DJ with residencies in Santa Ponsa, Spain, who will be playing alongside DJ Adam and DJ ANIL.

Tickets for the event are available from Eventbrite.ie and there will be a limited number of tickets available at the door. For more information follow @hydroteendisco on Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok.

While Shane Casey is best known for playing Billy Murphy in BBC-RTÉ award-winning comedy series, he is also gaining a reputation for his writing and stage roles. He wrote and starred in critically acclaimed play Wet Paint at the Cork Opera House. His film credits include The Wind That Shakes The Barley and The Runaway.
