AN Ardnacrusha product design student’s prize-winning artwork has been described as ‘a short story in visual imagery’. Dan Killackey, 18, from Ardnacrusha, was chosen overall winner of the 68th Texaco Children’s Art Competition, taking first prize in the senior 16-18 years age category. “I was delighted to win a national award,” Dan told the Champion, “Since 2019, I have known about this competition. I wish I had known sooner because I could have competed since I was six years old. I think it would be good to promote this art competition more in schools. “When I complete a sketch and see people’s satisfaction, it motivates me to continue doing art and get people smiling.” Clare also had the winner in the seven to eight years category, which went to Aidan Hehir, 7, a pupil at Ennis Art School. CLARE has enjoyed siginifcant success in this year’s 68th Texaco Children’s Art Competition with the overall winner coming from the Banner county. A PRIZE-WINNING artwork by 13-year-old Clare student Emily Barrow, from Colaìste Muire, Ennis, has been chosen to illustrate the 2022 Texaco Children’s Art Competition Calendar just published. One of 13 selected to illustrate the publication, her piece, entitled ‘The Forge’s Flowers’, right, will appear on the August page and will be seen in thousands of homes in Ireland during the coming year. Winning a Special Merit Award in the 2021 competition, it was one of a number said by a competition adjudicator to illustrate perfectly the outstanding talent, creativity and imagination that many of our young artists possess and the important role schools have in encouraging and inspiring their students through art education. A PRIZEWINNING artwork, entered by Ennis student Cillian Boyd, is one of 13 artworks selected from the archives to illustrate the 2021 Texaco Children’s Art Competition Calendar just published. Amongst artworks drawn from the past 16 years of the competition, Cillian submitted his entry entitled ‘Gulls, Autumn Morning’ in the 51st year of the competition, held in 2005, as a pupil at Gaelcholáiste an Chláir, Ennis. Winning third prize in the 14-15 years age category, his piece appears during the month of September in the new calendar where it will be seen in thousands of homes throughout Ireland during the coming year. Commenting at the time, a competition adjudicator said that Cillian’s piece was “one of a number that perfectly reflects the artistic talent and creativity that many young people in Ireland possess and the essential role schools play by encouraging and inspiring their students through art education”. Read More »National Texaco Children’s Art Award for five-year-old Kate
FIVE-years old Clare student artist, Kate Moran, from Nicola Art Class, Ennis, has won a top prize in this year’s 66th Texaco Children’s Art Competition for her work entitled ‘My Daisy’. Kate won a Special Merit Award for an artwork that final adjudicator, Professor Declan McGonagle said, “was imaginative and displayed a high level of skill”. With the onset of Covid-19, the competition had to be extended over a longer period this year with delays to the final adjudication process and the announcement of winners. As a result, activities normally undertaken during April and May, traditionally, the introduction of winners to the media and the formal presentation of prizes, had to be set aside as a consequence of which prizes will be delivered by hand without the possibility of an awards ceremony.
