RUAN’S Sharon Shannon is set to feature on a new travel and music television series showcasing Ireland’s hidden gems including a visit to County Clare, writes Conor Clohessy. Fáilte Ireland and TG4 have joined forces with the renowned musician on the programme ‘Heartlands’. The four-week series, commencing on Wednesday, August 11 at 8.30pm, features Sharon and her niece Caoilinn Ní Dhonnabháin showcasing the Shannon River region across Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. The pair will slowly cruise the River Shannon discovering the country while catching up with a host of musical friends, such as Liam O’Maonlaoi (Hothouse Flowers), Steve Wickham (The Waterboys), Eleanor Shanley, Nathan Carter, The Henshaws, Seamus Begley, Mundy, Gerry ‘Banjo’ O’Connor and Susan O’Neill. ACCLAIMED Corofin musician Sharon Shannon is to open this year’s Arts in Action programme at NUI Galway, in advance of a partnership between the Clare woman and the university’s music degree programme. On Wednesday, February 17, the accordion player will feature, alongside guitarist Jim Murray, in a free online lunchtime concert. The event will be presented as the 2021 Jean Ritchie Lecture and will celebrate Sharon’s musical virtuosity as well as the future potential arising from her engagement with music students as the next generation of emerging artists. The partnership will see Sharon delivering a series of masterclasses that look at different facets of the creation, performance and production of traditional Irish music, along with her long-time collaborator, Irish-American fiddle player, Win Horan. These masterclasses will be used as part of the teaching of traditional music modules within the new BA in Music. Read More »Loop Head lighthouse to shine a light on frontline workers
LOOP Head Lighthouse is to play a key role in a moment of national solidarity this month. Photographs of front-line workers are to be beamed onto the Clare lighthouse in tribute to their tireless work during the Covid-19 pandemic. The images were taken by photographer Jeanette Lowe and are one of six projection instalments across the country which will be illuminated in the days leading up to the winter solstice. The art installations will form part of a nationwide multi-platform event Shine Your Light, or Lonraigh Do Sholas. The event will also feature a live TV broadcast on RTÉ One featuring Clare’s Sharon Shannon, and a radio special on RTÉ Radio 1. PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins and Adam Clayton are set for a special Late Late Show musical tribute for Sharon Shannon tonight. In a statement yesterday RTE said, “She’s the doyenne of traditional Irish music, best known for her performances on the button accordion, and Sharon Shannon will be in studio for a very special evening honouring her contribution to the Irish trad scene over the years. Among those who will be paying tribute to Sharon’s talents will be President Michael D Higgins, and U2 bassist Adam Clayton. During the show, Sharon will be joined by some well-known Irish musicians including Adam, Donal Lunny, Denise Chaila, Steve Wickham, and Mundy to perform some of her best-known numbers for viewers at home. It will be a family affair, as Sharon’s brother Gary and niece Caolinn O’Donovan will also be joining in the trad session.”
