NUJ honours local media stalwarts

TWO local media stalwarts have been honoured for a lifetime of service to the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) at a ceremony organised by the union’s Irish South West branch. Clare Champion Sports Editor Seamus Hayes and public relations professional, Colman Garrihy were honoured for their service to the NUJ over more than 40 years. Lissycasey native Seamus Hayes is well known throughout the county and the region in his role with The Champion, having joined the newsroom directly from St Flannan’s College in Ennis, where he excelled both as a student and sportsman on various teams. Seamus joined the union when The Clare Champion chapel was set up in 1971. In the early days, he was a member of a very trim newsroom staff, which included another long-time NUJ member, Tony Mulvey. Awards on the double for ‘Champion sports coverage

THE Clare Champion’s coverage of Community Games activities was recognised at the national annual general meeting which was held in Westport in Mayo at the weekend. In the Provincial media section, the Clare Champion captured third prize. Sports editor, Seamus Hayes received the award from the organisation’s president, Gerry Davenport. The public relations officer of the Clare organisation, Mary Phelan from Sixmilebridge received an award for her work in that role. Over 200 volunteers descended on the Mayo town where keynote speaker, Kieran Mulvey, chairperson of the Irish Sports Council, praised the HSE Community Games for being a “nursery of sporting talent” in Ireland today. “The HSE Community Games is a shining star in Ireland today and the Irish Sports Council are proud to be associated with this nursery of sporting talent. National awards for Hayes and Durack

‘Clare Champion Sports Editor Seamus Hayes and former Clare hurling goalkeeper Seamus Durack were among the GAA giants receiving awards at a special ceremony in Dublin on Friday evening. Dublin’s Barney Rock, Clare’s Seamus Durack and Down’s Greg Blaney were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 2013 Cadbury Gaelic Writers’ Association Awards at Dublin’s Louis Fitzgerald Hotel. This year’s awards see Rock, Durack and Blaney become the latest GAA legends to be recognised by the Gaelic Writers’ Association. Durack was the star between the posts for the Clare hurlers during the ’70s when he won two National Hurling League medals. He was also recognized for his goalkeeping performances by winning All-Star awards in 1977, 1978 and 1981. Rock was a key figure on the Dublin side that won the 1983 All-Ireland senior football title. He also won four Leinster senior medals for Dublin and three All-Star awards between 1983 and 1985.
