Concerns over €3m Lahinch repair works

Clare County Council has moved to smooth the waters in relation to visual concerns concerning the proposed completion of Lahinch coastal repair works, costing in the region of €3 million. While a lot of protection work is almost completed opposite Seaworld and the car park, the Department of Heritage has expressed concern in relation to the visual concealment of the nearby protected structure during the second phase. The development comprises of repair works to the existing sea walls and access steps, a new 330m rock revetment structure along the length of the existing sea defences and revised surfacewater management proposals for the N67 national secondary road that would discharge to an outfall within the new rock armour protection. In addition, a small breakwater would be installed adjacent to the base of the stepped beach access. County councillors are being urged to support the repair and strengthening of the existing coastal defence revetment and seawall at the Old Promenade, Dough, Lahinch, …

Council plumbs depths with grave debate

A Lahinch county councillor has claimed that Clare County Council employees are “roaming” around North Clare, checking if graves are the required depth, which Councillor Bill Slattery has heard should now be eight-foot deep. Councillor Slattery has challenged the local authority to dig 10 eight-foot graves in Lahinch, where he says the rock formation mitigate against deep graves. “In recent times, a person was being buried and somebody came out and told them the coffin wasn’t down far enough,” Councillor Slattery claimed. “Was it someone from the council?” director of services, Ann Haugh asked. “I believe so. They couldn’t go down any further because they had met rock. They were down five-foot-nine and he said ‘ye better go down to eight foot. By Seamus Hayes Ennis Town Rock A 1  Newmarket Celtic A 0 There were great scenes of celebration at Lees Road this Friday evening as Ennis Town Rock A were crowned Clare soccer premier league champions for the first time in the club’s history. Goint into Friday’s games, three teams were in the running for the title, Avenue United A, Newmarket Celtic A and Ennis Town Rock A. Avenue A secored their expected win over Hermitage A at the Fairgreen in a tie that finished 4-0 in their favour. To remain in the race, they needed Ennis Town Rock and Newmarket to play a draw but this cup final repeat saw the Ennis side avenge that result and deservingly take the league crown. The all important goal came in the first minute of the second half and it was scored by the team captain and former league of Ireland player Stephen Hickey.
