LADIES FOOTBALL: Stuttering start for leaky Banner in All-Ireland championship

All-Ireland Intermediate Ladies Football Championship Round 2 Leitrim 4-7 Clare 2-9 CLARE’S bizarre opening round hoodoo continued this afternoon when ambushed by a ravenous Leitrim who deservedly topped the group in Duggan Park in Ballinasloe, reports Eoin Brennan. Following first round reverses against Wexford (2019) and Kildare (2020), Division 4 finalists Leitrim completed the Banner’s unwanted hat-trick to cause the biggest upset of them all as prior to last week, the Connaught side had not won a championship match since 2017. They certainly made up for lost time as four perfectly timed goals provided consistent sucker-punches that accumulated into too big a mountain to climb for a Clare side that just couldn’t get out of second gear at any stage. Footballers draw with Leitrim

Clare 0-11 Leitrim 1-8 A POINTED Leitrim free, eight minutes into injury time, snatched a point for the Connacht county in Miltown Malbay on Sunday afternoon. Both teams are now tied on three points in NFL division 4. Wicklow, who beat Antrim, top the division on full points from two games. Emlyn Mulligan, who also scored Leitrim’s first half goal, pointed the decisive free which was conceded by Cathal O’Connor. The Coolmeen man was shown a black card by Offaly referee Damien Brazil. When Martin O’Leary pointed a superb score, five minutes earlier, Clare led 0-11 to 1-6 and it lookeds as if they would hold on for a crucial win. However substitute Ray Cox pointed Leitrim to within a score of Clare before Mulligan equalised. Clare played with the wind in the opening half but the teams were level, 1-3 to 0-6 after half tiime. Change of venue for football league tie

  Sunday’s football league tie between Clare and Leitrim has been switched from Cusack Park in Ennis to Hennessy Park in Miltown. Friday night’s heavy rain has led to the decision to move the eagerly awaited round two tie to the West Clare venue where the throw in time will be 2p.m. Full back Kevin Hartnett and full forward David Tubridy, both of whom impressed in the first round win over Waterford last week, have been ruled out due to injury. In all the team will show four changes in personnel and some positional switches from that which won in Dungarvan. As expected, dual star Podge Collins who was hugely impressive when introduced in the second half against Waterford, is in from the start this week while Enda Coughlan returns after injury and he has been named at centre back.
