THE Promenade in Lahinch is set to reopen within days, while other facilities in the North Clare resort will take much longer, it has been confirmed. The surface of the prom, its railings, signs and the adjacent car park were badly damaged by the “ferocious” storm that hit the country last weekend. Commercial buildings in the area were also damaged by flooding and waves, which reached higher than many buildings on the prom. Lahinch Seaworld is closed until further notice because of flooding and associated damage, estimated to cost tens of thousands of euro. The nearby playground is also closed until it has been assessed by engineers. PUBLIC representatives in Clare are calling for Government funding to repair damage caused by last night’s storm. Among the places along the coast to suffer most damage were Lahinch, Doolin, Quilty, Seafield, and Carrigahol, while there was serious flooding in parts of East Clare and other inland areas. Fine Gael Senator, Martin Conway, has said he contacted the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, to discuss what contingency funding can be made available to repair homes and structures which were badly damaged during the storm overnight. “Last night’s storm has devastated many parts of Clare, resulting in people being evacuated from their homes and huge parts of the county suffering from severe structural damage. UPDATED 1pm, Friday, January 3: Lahinch Promenade is closed to the public because of damage caused by last night’s storm and fears further flooding could be in store tonight. Clare County Council has confirmed that Lahinch Promenade in County Clare will remain closed to the public until further notice after the Promenade walkways and seawall were “seriously comprised” during stormy weather overnight. Clare County Council says that Units of Clare Civil Defence and Clare County Fire and Rescue Service have been mobilised to deal with the incident and if required, other incidents throughout the county. The manager of Clare County Council and the county’s senior engineer were in Lahinch this morning assessing the damage to the prom and public amenities there. Further damage has been reported in Doolin, Spanish Point and Quilty. As well as infrastructural damage to car parks, roads and footpaths, homes and businesses were also affected.
