€4.6m sports grants for Clare clubs: how did your community do?

SPORTS capital grant funding of €4.6m will be shared among 69 clubs in Clare, as part of a nationwide fund of €150m announced by Minister for Sport Jack Chambers.

Ranging in size from €4,624 up to €138,768,the grants will facilitate infrastructure and improvement works in clubs across the county. (see the full list at the bottom of the piece)

Among the biggest winners are St Joseph’s Doora Barefield GAA, Kilmurry Ibrickane GAA, Ennistymon GAA Club, East Clare Golf Club and Burren Riding Club, while soccer clubs competing in Limerick but based in Clare like Corbally United and Ballynanty Rovers are also included.

Fianna Fáil TD for Clare Cathal Crowe has welcomed the allocation saying he was “delighted to see this huge investment in sports facilities throughout Clare”.

“Time spent involved in sports is golden time for young people and it’s only right that we invest in the facilities that improve participation. This year, Minister Chambers placed particular emphasis on clubs that prioritised female participation and also reached out to others in the community.”

“I’ve been hugely impressed by the way in which some of our county’s sports clubs have teamed up with the likes of disability groups and active retirement groups.

“Many of our county’s sports fields are these days not just used for training sessions and matches but also by local people walking and jogging to keep fit.

“In this sense, sports clubs have become much more inclusive and really are the backbone of the community.

“Our collective experience of Covid over the past two years has really made us appreciate community and community organisations all the more.

“I hope over the next 12 months, a new round of applications for Sports Capital Funding can be announced and I will again help Clare sports groups to achieve a maximum allocation within this.”

Deputy Joe Carey added, “This major cash injection will deliver a timely shot in the arm for clubs across the County Clare as we emerge from the dark days of the pandemic. I want to pay tribute to the volunteers in our sports clubs who put a huge amount of time and effort into putting these successful applications together.

“The vast majority of projects to be funded include upgraded facilities, pitch draining, club-house refurbishment, new walkways, floodlights, indoor domes and gym facilities. Sport plays a really positive role in our lives, the interruption caused by the pandemic illustrated this point and it’s truly wonderful to have sport back. I look forward to all these successful applicants moving on with their projects in the time ahead.”
