Credit unions set up relief fund for flood victims

All the Clare credit unions have linked up with St Vincent de Paul to open a Clare Relief Fund, whereby people across the county can lodge money that will go directly to those affected by the floods in Clare.

The initiative is the first of its kind to be co-ordinated involving all the local credit unions and ensures that those across the county can donate funds to the Clare flood victims.
Speaking about the special account, Louis Fay, the general manager with St Francis Credit Union in Ennis said, “It’s just a way to give people an outlet to donate. They can go into any credit union to make a donation and all they have to do is to ask to make a lodgement to the Clare Relief Fund.
“Credit unions across the county are involved, which include Derg Credit Union in Scariff, Ennistymon, Kilrush, Fergus in Lissycasey, Shannon, Sixmilebridge, St Francis, Ennis and St Peter and Paul’s, Clarecastle. Once the fund comes to an end, we will hand over the funds to St Vincent de Paul to administer the funds. We expect it will run for maybe two to three weeks.”
Asked how the initiative came about, Louis said, “To be honest I just felt a little bit useless when the flooding happened and thought this would be a good idea to help and that it might gather pace”.
