Aideen Walsh, who is a member of both Lahinch and Woodstock Golf Clubs, was crowned Ulster Women’s Strokeplay Champion as she defended the title that she secured in 2021.
Walsh finished -5 for the tournament, five strokes ahead of Roscommon Golf Club’s Olivia Costello and Kate Lanigan from Hermitage Golf Club.
This was a dominant victory for the Ennis native as an opening round of 69 saw her take a two-shot lead over Jan Browne. Despite a double-bogey on her very first hole, Walsh produced some terrific golf over the rest of the round.
Birdies on the third, fifth, tenth, fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth holes allowed her to finish the round on -4. Despite a bogey on the thirteenth during her second round, Walsh birdied holes 10 and 15 to give herself every chance of recapturing the title.
A confident Walsh played solidly in the opening stages of the final round and despite a bogey on the fourth, birdies on the third and fifth holes helped her to consolidate her advantage.
A missed putt on the seventh briefly gave the chasing pack hope but a bogey on the 13th was quickly followed by a birdie on the very next hole as Walsh recaptured the title that she won at Royal County Down last year.
This success means that Walsh will now join Jack Hearn and Robert Brazill in competing at the ISPS Handa World Golf Invitational in August. Earlier this year, Walsh was selected to represent Ireland at the European Nations Championship.
The Ennis native joins Jake Whelan, Colm Campbell, and Jack Hearn in being nominated for the May Bridgestone Player of the Month. Voting for this award opened on Golf Ireland’s Twitter page on Wednesday afternoon and will close at 5pm on Friday evening.
The winner will join Olivia Lucas in the Bridgestone Roll of Honour for 2022 after the Liscannor golfer won the April award with over 45% of the vote. Lucas claimed the Lahinch Scratch Cup in April, edging out Walsh to win by four strokes and lift the Vaughan Trophy.
