WHEN a 16-year-old Faye Curran sat down in her bedroom inspired by the work of Róisín Ingle to pen an entry for the 2016 Clare Champion Short Story competition little did she realise that one day she would be collaborating with the acclaimed author and journalist. An article co-written by Faye and Róisín exploring how Covid has changed sex for Gen Z was recently published in the Irish Times magazine, with Faye telling us it was “amazing” to be able to work with her writing hero. While she is thrilled to see her byline appearing next to Róisín’s, Faye has never forgotten where it all started, seeing her writings published for the first time in The Clare Champion as part of the popular schools’ competition. FOUR Clare students are among a record number to have been awarded Entrance Exhibition Awards from Trinity College Dublin. The awards go to the students accepted into the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree programme who achieve the highest points among Trinity entrants from their secondary school, above a minimum of 500 CAO points (or equivalent). The Clare recipients are: Lily Price from Colaiste Muire; Hugh Grogan, St Anne’s Community College; Ixim Dagge Hernandez, Ennistymon Vocational School and Nuoxi Zhang, St Flannan’s College. Many former awardees have gone on to make a significant contribution to the economic, cultural, and political life of Ireland and beyond. Past Exhibitioners include Tánaiste and former Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar. Of the 2021 entrants to Trinity, 686 students qualified for an award, up from 527 in 2020. The students from across the county are among 527 students to receive Trinity College entrance awards. There are almost 40% fewer properties available to rent compared to this time last year according to the latest quarterly Rental Report by Daft.ie. Nationally, rents have risen by over 10% in the space of 12 months, with the national average rent now €915 compared to €825 a year previously. This will seriously impact on Clare third level students seeking accommodation in towns and cities across the country. In Clare, rents were on average 2.2% higher in the second quarter of 2014 than a year previously. The average advertised rent is now €554, a fall of 27% from the peak. Rents rose in every county, bar Donegal, and all city centres experienced rises of between 3% in Waterford and 17% in Dublin. There are now 6,800 properties available to rent across the country, down from 11,000 in August 2013.
