A large crowd is expected in Doolin this Sunday for a call-to-action of local people against the designation of the old Doolin Pier as a port. Hundreds of swimmers and other water users are expected to congregate at Doolin Pier at 6.30pm this Sunday, September 3, in a show of community strength against plans which could see people prevented from using the old pier for personal use. Local people have traditionally used the old pier in Doolin as a location for swimming and water sports. Indeed, Clare County Council stationed a lifeguard at the pier as recently as 2014. Earlier this year, signs were erected at the old pier which indicated that swimming was prohibited from that location. A new pier was recently completed in Doolin and many locals feel that the new pier should be designated for the use of ferries and boats, while the old pier should be reserved for the use of the public. “We are having …

A Lough Derg swimmer scaled the heights at the Irish National Team trials by recording his first individual senior record. Dominating the 400 metre Freestyle Final in an impressive performance, Finn McGeever finished on 3.52.83 in the Irish National Swimming Championship, which smashed Northern Ireland’s Jack McMillian’s 2019 record of 3.53.31 In fact, the Ballina swimmer achieved success on the double with his second place finish in the semi-final and third place in the final of the 200 metre freestyle, placing him in a strong position to secure a coveted place on the Irish 4×200 metre relay team for the next Olympics Games. Interestingly, the main focus of Finn’s ambitions wasn’t the 400 metre freestyle but the 200 metre freestyle in his efforts to win one of the hotly-contested spots on the Irish men’s 4×200 metre relay team. The members and substitutes of the Irish men’s 4×200 metre relay team was due to be officially announced on Wednesday. Selection is …

THERE is widespread disappointment with the return of swimming bans at North and West Clare beaches. Inside the last hour, Clare County Council has re-issued a temporary prohibition on swimming at Lahinch, White Strand Miltown Malbay, Spanish Point and Kilkee. This is on the advice of the HSE, the local authority says, because of increased bacterial levels in the bathing water. A statement from the council said situation is being monitored regularly and the prohibition on swimming will remain until further notice. The risk from increased bacterial levels is a result of run-off from the catchment area after heavy rainfall. For further information, contact Clare County Council environment section on (065) 6846331 / enviroff@clarecoco.ie and visit www.beaches.ie

EVAN Cronin is organising a swimathon for February 4, which will hopefully see 100km covered by multiple swimmers in five hours. The Active Ennis Leisure Complex will be the venue for the swimathon, which will run from 12noon to 5pm. Make A Wish is the charity to benefit from funds raised. “The whole point is to get as many people from the community involved. We have five hours to get 100km done in two lanes. It’s quite a challenge, so the more people we get involved the better,” said Evan. He is preparing for an epic swim of his own later in the year. “I’m swimming or attempting to swim the English Channel in September. Everything is booked; it’s all set to go. I’ve pledged €25,000 to Make A Wish and we’ll have to do a load of events prior to the Channel swim itself to raise all that money for them.” The event on February 4 requires people to …

The Irish Coast Guard and the RNLI have issued a joint appeal this Bank Holiday weekend for people to be vigilant and to take care on the water and along the coastline. It comes as both organisations note that August was the busiest month for coastal recreational incidents last year. Irish lifeboat crews last August alone responded 217 times to emergencies at sea. With the summer holidays in full swing, it has been a busy time for the search and rescue agencies and this Bank Holiday weekend, the two organisations are warning people to be vigilant and take heed of some simple safety advice. While summer air temperatures may be warm, Irish waters rarely exceed 15C, making them cold enough year-round to trigger cold water shock, which causes the instinctive reaction to gasp and swim hard, which can quickly lead to drowning. As part of its drowning prevention campaign, Respect the Water, the RNLI is calling on the public to …
