A SIXMILEBRIDGE mother has launched a fundraising campaign to purchase additional nursing hours for her son, who has a life-limiting, very rare illness. A new group, Nurses for Jordan, has organised a fundraising event in the Mill Bar, Sixmilebridge on Friday, December 13 in aid of local boy Jordan Perez (5), who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type Two. This will be just the start of a series of fundraising functions, which are required to purchase more nursing hours to meet his complex medical needs. SMA Type Two is part of a group of disorders that affect the control of muscle movements. It is caused by a loss of specialised nerve cells in the spinal cord and brainstem. Confined to a wheelchair, Jordan requires full-time care on a 24-hour basis. By Seamus Hayes Na Piarsaigh, Limerick 4-14 Sixmilebridge 0-8 Sixmilebridge’s dream of a fourth Munster club senior hurling title was well and truly buried at Cusack Park in Ennis when they had no answer to the power of their Limerick counterparts Na Piarsaigh. Before an attendance of 3,689, the Clare champions were beaten in all sections and Na Piarsaigh had secured their place in the All-Ireland final long before the final whistle sounded. Managed and coached by Sixmilebridge man Sean Stack, the Limerick champions dominated in almost every sector and they led from the first minute when Kevin Downes found the net in their first attack. They were six points clear at half time when the score was 1-8 to 0-5 and any hopes of a Sixmilebridge fight back were rocked thirty seconds after the resumption when the visitors had their second goal, Kevin Ryan deflecting a Shane Dowling delivery past Derek Fahy.         Goal number three arrived …

Sixmilebridge  1-17 Midleton  1-13 AFTER a somewhat tentative start, Clare senior hurling champions Sixmilebridge produced an outstanding performance to overcome Midleton in the provincial senior club championship semi-final at Pairc Úi Caoimh on Sunday. The ‘Bridge were fully deserving of the win, which gives them a Munster final date with Na Piarsaigh from Limerick on Sunday. The involvement of former Sixmilebridge great, Sean Stack, as manager of the Limerick outfit, will add spice to the tie. Midleton, who had ended a 22-year wait for victory, in the Cork championship, had a two week break ahead of Sunday’s meeting, while the Clare champions captured their 11th title when defeating the holders Newmarket just seven days previously. It took the Clare champions a while to settle and they can count themselves fortunate not to have been a few points behind at the end of the opening quarter, when Midleton were guilty of some poor shooting. At rain lashed Cusack Park on Sunday, they dethroned champions Newmarket in a fiercely competitive tie. The final scoreline of 1-10 to 0-11 is an accurate reflection of a tie which produced some great hurling despite the atrocious conditions. The winners had a dream start when top scorer Niall Gilligan scored the game’s only goal as early as the second minute when he drilled a penalty to the net following a foul on Alan Mulready. From here they held the lead until two minutes from the break when Colin Ryan levelled. The holders hit the last five points of the half to move from being three in arrears to holding a two point lead at the break, 0-9 to 1-4. By Seamus Hayes Sixmilebridge will host the annual GOAL charity match involving the newly crowned All-Ireland  hurling champions on this Wednesday evening(October 2) at 7.30p.m. The match will be between an A and B Clare selection and all funds raised will go to the GOAL charity. Admission will be €5 and children under 16 will be admitted free of charge. Its expected that the entire All-Ireland senior squad will be involved in what has become an annual post All-Ireland final match involving the winners. Initially the match featured the newly crowned champions against a Rest of Ireland selection but more recently the champions have faced the club title holders in their county. With round 2 in the Clare senior hurling championship scheduled  for this coming weekend, the organisers have opted for an A v B game. The match will p rovide an oppostunity for fans to meet up with the players that ended a sixteen year wait for Clare on …

A MAN in his twenties has died following a road traffic collision in Sixmilebridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Gardaí in Shannon are investigating the single vehicle crash, which occurred at approximately 4.30am on the Sixmilebridge Road to Shannon, and are appealing for witnesses. It is understood that the car collided with a wall and the man, who was the only occupant, died following injuries sustained in the crash. He has not yet been named and his body has been removed to the University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem will take place on this afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to contact Shannon Garda Station on 061-365900 or the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-111-666 or any garda station. Investigations are continuing.
