It was a case of lightening striking twice at Sixmilebridge in recent weeks, although not on the same dramatic scale. An anonymous players won €4.4 million in the National Lottery Jackpot, having purchased a quick pick ticket at Reddans last month. Despite the best effort of locals to uncover the identity of the winner, not a sniff of information has leaked out. Meanwhile, Lady Luck has also shined for well-know local man,Tom Sheehan, who won €53,000, including a shopping spree, at the National Lottery’s Money Spinner event at National Lottery offices in Dublin. Tom was the biggest winner of five players. The winning ticket was purchased in O’Garney Centre, Sixmilebridge.

At Cusack Park this Saturday evening, they suffered a three point defeat at the hands of their neighbours and great rivals Cratloe, a result that ended their hopes of holding onto the title they won impressively last year. Having already lost to Crusheen in the opening round, the Bridge had to win this one to remain in the race. To their credit, they put in a  strong performance but, they just could not break down a stubborn Cratloe outfit. The winners played with the aid of the wind in the opening half and were five points up at half time when the score was 1-10 to 0-8, the goal coming from Conor McGrath midway through the half. A Sixmilebridge boy, who has a very rare life-limiting illness has travelled in the world’s first interactive children’s ambulance, to make long journeys to hospital more comfortable. Jordan Perez, who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type Two, was the first Clare child to use the BUMBLEance recently. SMA Type Two is part of a group of disorders that affect the control of muscle movements. Confined to a wheelchair, Jordan requires full-time care on a 24-hour basis. He was honoured as one of Ireland’s nine bravest children at a Share a Dream’s National Children of Courage Awards at their Dream Ball in Clontarf Castle, Dublin last year. BUMBLEance transports sick children from all over Ireland to their treatment centres and attempt to make like a little easier for the child and their parents. A NUMBER of councillors expressed anger at problems in the water supply around Sixmilebridge and Cratloe, at this week’s Shannon Municipal District meeting. Councillor John Crowe put forward motions asking that the Cappa/Rossmanagher Group Water Scheme and the Castlecrine Group Water Scheme both be taken over by Irish Water. Fianna Fáil Councillor Cathal Crowe asked that the council and Irish Water devise a plan to improve water pressure to the Wood Road in Cratloe. Regarding the Cappa/Rossmanagher scheme, Councillor John Crowe said that people on it have only got “a trickle of water for the last three or four weeks and they have no place to go to try and get this rectified.” He claimed it is “an absolute disgrace” that issues with group water schemes can’t be sorted out. A cyclist was airlifted to hospital on Thursday evening with extensive injuries following an accident a few miles from her home. The woman, in her early 40s and from Sixmilebridge, had been cycling with friends along a country road at Granaghan More, near Fenloe Lake, when the accident occurred. It’s understood that she was in collision with a passing lorry and sustained extensive injuries to one of her hands. Two units of the fire brigade from Shannon along with an ambulance and rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the incident. The Emergency Aeromedical Service was alerted and the HSE’s air ambulance, operated by the Air Corps, was requested to attend the scene. Fire crews selected a clear landing site for the helicopter before she was airlifted to University Hospital Galway for emergency surgery. The other cyclists were uninjured but were said to have been left badly shaken by the incident. Gardaí from Newmarket on Fergus are investigating.

The Clare Champion-sponsored Clare Primary Schools hurling and camogie finals were played out in splendid sunshine at Cusack Park on Tuesday and Wednesday Hundreds of children from all over the county participated in 12 finals, which produced top class fare. In fact, judging by the skill level shown by the boys and girls augurs well for the future of  hurling in the Banner County. Sixmilebridge won the Division 1 title with a hard-earned victory over Inagh/Cloonanaha. In camogie, Flagmount/Dromindoora defeated Clonlara to win the Division 1 title. A Clare county councillor has called for the micro-chipping of livestock, as a measure to reduce the risk of theft, following yet another cattle rustling incident in the South East Clare area. Independent Cratloe councillor, PJ Ryan said that in light of the number of livestock thefts, the Department of Agriculture should consider micro-chipping all animals in preference to the tagging system currently in operation. “It’s way too easy to remove tags with the result that stolen animals are rarely, if ever, traced. Dogs and cats can be micro-chipped; maybe it is time cattle were also. Certainly, it would be a more foolproof system,” he added. Councillor Ryan was commenting as gardaí are investigating the lifting of livestock from lands at Woodcock Hill in Meelick during the past week. In the latest incident of cattle rustling, two cows and six calves were stolen and gardaí are investigating. Similar incidents of livestock thefts have occurred in Sixmilebridge and Quin.

Councillor John Crowe of Sixmilebridge was elected Mayor of Clare at the county council AGM held on this Friday afternoon. Councillor Crowe was nominated by poll topper Joe Cooney and seconded by Independent Gerry Flynn. The Fine Gael councillor is the county’s outgoing deputy mayor. Councillor Crowe will  be the only Fine Gael member to hold the position of mayor over the five-year term of the new authority. Two Fianna Fáil  members will have the honour of holding office, while the “technical group”, consisting of the seven Independents and one Sinn Féin, will also have two terms of office. Fianna Fáil’s Councillor Tony O’ Brien of the Killaloe Electoral area was elected deputy mayor for the coming year. Councillor O’Brien was re-elected to the council last month having lost his seat in the 2009 local election. Mayor Crowe paid tribute to the councillors who lost their seats and who retired.
