The High Court has struck out an action for damages brought by the widower of murdered mother of two Sylvia Roche Kelly. The body of Ms Roche Kelly was found lying face down in the bath of a hotel in December 2007, after she met her murderer while out celebrating her 33rd birthday. She was violently beaten and strangled. Gerard McGrath Ballywalter, Knockavilla, County Tipperary, was later sentenced at the Central Criminal Court to life imprisonment after admitting murdering Ms Roche Kelly at The Clarion Hotel, Limerick, on December 8, 2007. McGrath was on bail at that time on a charge of assaulting a female taxi driver in April 2007. Her widower, Lorcan Roche Kelly from Sixmilebridge sued the State and other parties, including the Garda Commissioner and the Minister for Justice, for damages alleging his wife’s killer was “free to commit the crime of murder when he should have been in custody.” He claimed the failure and inaction of …

LOCAL woman Lou McMahon will be singing at Sixmilebridge’s Winter Music Weekend. “I’m playing on January 18 in the Mill Bar for the grand finale concert. Before that, during the day, I’m at singers’ session,” she said last week. Regarding her music, she said, “I’m a singer/songwriter and I’d consider myself to be in the contemporary folk genre. I’ve been playing for a number of years and I’m just off tour with Jack L. I was support act. “Musically, my influences are mostly American folk songwriters; people like Joni Mitchell and I always liked PJ Harvey. Also, country singers like Alison Krauss, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, all the old songwriters. From an early stage in the 2014 county hurling season, it was predicted that Cratloe and Clonlara would contest the Clare championship final, provided they remained on opposite sides of the draw. While the draw ensured that was the case, Crusheen instead managed to dump Clonlara out of the race at the semi-final stage. After the championship, the Clare Champion Cup (senior league) is the next most important competition. Winners of the Canon Hamilton trophy, Cratloe have never won the league title. Clonlara’s last success was in 2009, when they won the title for only the second time, having won their first a year earlier, when they also won the championship. O’Garney Park in Sixmilebridge will host the Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship semi-final on Sunday (throw-in 2pm) when county champions Feakle take on their Waterford counterparts Cappoquin. Little is known about the Déise representatives and with home advantage, Feakle will go into the game as slight favourites. In their only competitive outing since winning the title, when beating Parteen in the final, they made county senior champions, Cratloe, fight all the way before going under narrowly in the semi-final of the Clare Champion Cup. A SIXMILEBRIDGE county councillor has spoken out, after his business was targeted by criminals this week, leaving him €2,000 out of pocket due to damage caused to 12 of his tractors. Councillor PJ Ryan’s tractor and grass care business in Sixmilebridge was entered by thieves on Tuesday night and heavy-duty batteries were stolen from 12 tractors he had in the yard of the premises. In addition, a new lawnmower and metal object were also stolen. He said the items stolen would cost in the region of €2,000 to replace. This is the third time in a year and a half that the business has been targeted and Councillor Ryan said not only were the batteries stolen but significant damage was also caused while removing them. “This is the third time we have been targeted in about a year and a half. We had a safe taken before and we’ve been targeted for the same type of material before – about …

Gardai have confirmed that they have located Sixmilebridge teenager Dylan O’Doherty safe and well. The 15 year old was last seen at his home in Cappa Lodge eight days ago. No further details are available at this time.

A number of villages in East Clare will be without water supply following a major break on the water network near Sooreeney Cross in Sixmilebridge. The areas without water or have reduced water supply until further notice include Kilmurry, Quin, Kilkishen, O’Callaghans Mills and Tulla. A number of group water schemes are also affected including Ballycar GWS, Deerpark GWS, Drumline GWS, Killanena GWS, Lackyle GWS, Corbally Danganbrack GWS, Cullane GWS, Caherkine GWS, Ballymarkham GWS, Knocknagoug GWS. Traffic diversions are also in place. Traffic coming from Kilmurry will be diverted onto the Mart Road from Kilmurry to Sixmilebridge. Traffic from Sixmilebridge to Kilmurry will be diverted at Sooreeney Cross. HGV’s coming from and into Sixmilebridge will be diverted via Cratloe and/or Shannon. Water tankers are available for water distribution at Kilmurry National School and outside the church in Quin until 4pm today.
