The were some very exciting contests at the Clare Primary Schools hurling and camogie finals in Cusack Park, Ennis on Tuesday and Wednesday. The competition is sponsored by The Clare Champion. For the children, it was a great experience to play in the county grounds, and many spoke of their wish to play there for their clubs in the future. Pupils from all of the schools were there to lend support, along with parents and family members. St Conaire’s, Shannon co-ordinated this year’s programme and will continue to due so for the next two year. WHILE Intel will not comment on how their redundancy programme will affect its Shannon operation, it is expected that job losses are likely to be proportionate to the numbers going throughout the company. Intel is laying off 11% of workers around the world and there are around 250 employees in Shannon. An Intel spokesperson said on Wednesday that voluntary redundancy will be available to people within certain criteria, while information on job losses at their individual sites is not currently available. Shannon is a core European research and development site for Intel’s communications and intelligent systems businesses. The company first came to Shannon in 2000, when there were around 40 employees. The work at Shannon is highly skilled, with 95% of workers there educated to third level or higher. According to its website, there are three main focus areas in Shannon: communications and storage infrastructure group, automotive solutions division and a retail solutions division. TWO people have been arrested following an incident at a funeral in Shannon on Sunday, while parish priest Fr Tom Ryan said lives could have been lost but for the intervention of the gardaí. Martin ‘Red Breast’ McDonagh died last Wednesday night and was reposing in Shannon on Sunday before his funeral, which took place in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo on Monday. It is understood that a row broke out close to Ss John and Paul Church, in which a number of people, associated with two separate families, were involved. No arrests were made in relation to this. Shortly afterwards, one vehicle rammed into another at traffic lights close to Aidan Park. Another vehicle, owned by a party not connected with the dispute, was also damaged. A vehicle was seized at the Old Lodge shortly afterwards and one person arrested. A second person was subsequently arrested. SHANNON Group made a profit of just under €7.3 million last year. The Group encompasses Shannon Airport, Shannon Commercial Properties, Shannon Heritage and Shannon IASC. Its accounts show that it had total fixed and current assets of €147.5 million and total equity of €120.2 million. There were liabilities of €27.3 million. The accounts show that aeronautical and commercial activities were responsible for €37.76 million in revenue, commercial property rental, management and development for €14.22 million and tourism activities for €13.57 million. Shannon Group saw depreciation of just under €4 million in 2015. Wages and salaries for the year came to €28 million while there were social welfare costs of €2.46 million. On average Shannon Group employed 481 staff during the year. Four hundred and two were in operations and administration, 48 in commercial activities and 31 in property. An Austrian Airlines plane diverted to Shannon Airport this Thursday (April 21) and a disruptive passenger was removed from the flight. It is understood the man, who is 29 years of age, was intoxicated on board the flight which was travelling from Vienna to New York. The plane landed in Shannon at 1.10pm on Thursday and the passenger was taken from the flight. A senior garda confirmed that the passenger had consumed a significant amount of alcohol and was refused more alcohol on the flight. “He then became aggressive and difficult to the staff. They had to move a number of passengers away from his area. Obviously the disruption was so severe that the captain diverted the plane, he wanted him removed from the flight as he felt it was unsafe to continue with him on board,” the garda spokesperson said. The man is understood to be from Albania originally but has been living in the United States for 25 years …

Seán Kelly MEP, is hosting a visit by a European Parliament delegation to the Mid-West this week. MEPs will meet company representatives from Shannon LNG and Shannon Foynes Port tomorrow (Thursday). The MEPs belonging to the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy are on a fact-finding mission to learn about the local innovations and research in the area of technology and energy. ONE Shannnon man has vowed he will chain himself to gates at the site of the proposed crematorium at Illaunnamanagh to stop machinery getting in to start work. Pat Madden says he is utterly determined to prevent the crematorium going ahead at the current location, which he says is very inappropriate. “I’m only speaking for myself here now, my colleagues and I have to debate it, but I am prepared to chain myself to the gate. Should it proceed a bit farther, there is another option open to me,” he said. While he didn’t go into detail on what other options he might be considering, he added, “I’m prepared to take very, very extensive measures, but that’s not a threat of violence or anything like that.” However, he indicated that his own personal safety might be at risk. SHANNON Family Resource Centre (SFRC) is hosting a new support group for fathers who are living apart from their children. A spokesperson for SFRC said, “It’s just two weeks old, it’s very new. It came from the community, a request was made here. A couple of fathers were talking to each other, looking for a space where they could share information and offer support to each other. That’s how the idea came about – local lads met and they are still meeting.” Speaking about the issues that are being dealt with in the group, the spokesperson explained, “Basically, the fathers are not with the mothers of the children and it’s been about custody and things like that. It’s really a group for dads, who feel they don’t have a voice particularly around shared care.” As time goes by, the group will go in the direction that those involved want it to. “It has to be what they want in a …
