Some €380,000 has been earmarked for local improvement schemes in Clarecastle, Kilkee, Scariff and Shannon from the €10 million national kitty. Each of the four Clare projects will receive €95,000 to finance a wide range improvements that have been put forward by local community groups to make their towns and villages more attractive places in which to live and work. In Clarecastle, the funding will be used to put electric and phone cables underground, replace lighting columns, provide lighting for public spaces, redesign traffic dominated spaces, upgrade footpaths and crossings, as well as planting and painting throughout the village. The €95,000 allocated to Kilkee will be used for landscaping and to provide public art at Percy French Green and the Carrigaholt roundabout. Scariff will benefit from work on safety and access to the access to public areas while the allocation to Shannon will go towards delivering the Shannon Town Green Infrastructure Plan. “We are determined to get this funding delivered …

CRUEL, sickening homophobic violence overshadowed Garrii Bailey’s teenage years in Shannon, but now he is bringing his drag act back to his hometown in November. In the aftermath of last year’s same-sex marriage referendum it is easy to forget how deeply ingrained homophobia was, to the point that violence and verbal abuse aimed at gay people was relatively commonplace, something which often went unremarked upon. CREATING the environment to deliver an additional 4,000 jobs in Clare over the next five years is one of the ambitious targets set by the Clare County Council chief, Pat Dowling. Next Monday, Mr Dowling officially starts his seven-year term, with the possibility of a three-year extension, as the council’s new chief executive officer. In an exclusive interview with The Clare Champion, Mr Dowling has outlined a number of key economic objectives, which will help to transform the county, if they are successfully implemented during his term of office. Asked if he feels the target of 4,000 is achievable, Mr Dowling said that, while it is ambitious, “If you don’t go for it, you don’t get there.” He added, “Tipperary thought that Kilkenny were favourites to win the All-Ireland title but they annihilated them. The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) shows Shannon to be among the cleanest towns in Ireland. Shannon is positioned sixth in the ranking of 40 towns and cities and deemed Cleaner than European Norms. Ennis also recorded one of its best results in years, in 14th position. While nearly all of Ireland’s main towns are now clean, pockets of our major cities continue to suffer from significant levels of litter, The study, conducted by an Taisce, showed only two of 25 towns surveyed to be littered, but 7 of the 8 bottom places in the rankings to be occupied by city areas. IBAL says councils need to concentrate on those specific areas where the problem is worst. Modular Automation, a leading supplier of automation solutions for Medical Device and Technology multinationals,has opened a €3m expansion at its Shannon plant. The enhanced facility, which was constructed by Nautic Building Co and designed by architect Noel Kerley, was unveiled on Monday by Enterprise Ireland CEO Julie Sinnamon. he expansion doubles the company’s footprint in Shannon to 50,000 sq. ft., and includes a state of the art Innovation Centre and Technology Lab. The new Innovation Centre strengthens Modular Automation’s position as the preferred partner in the delivery of high performance automation and robotics solutions for its growing client base. This project is part of a strategic growth plan, which also involved the opening of a subsidiary in Florida in 2015, and coincides with the company’s 30-year business anniversary. HOME to over 100 companies and with more than 7,000 employees working there, Shannon Free Zone is one of the largest clusters of indigenous industry outside of Dublin. This week, former senator and county councillor Tony Mulcahy said he feels things are going in the right direction but local Councillor Gerry Flynn has far more reservations about what has been happening there. “Smithstown is full, you can’t get a place to park. There are a good few units available in the industrial estate but a lot of what is there is not great. That is a legacy issue, it wouldn’t exactly be a State secret. They have applied to build new units. The top two bays at the industrial estate have been flattened now, they are in for planning there for office space and small industry,” said Mr Mulcahy. TEN new jobs have been created at Atlantic Aviation Group in Shannon, adding to an existing workforce of over 200 employees. HR and training director, Caoimhe O’Donnell said, “We are creating a new project team of licensed B1 and B2 engineers and aircraft mechanics, who will add extra strength and flexibility to our existing aircraft maintenance workforce, as the company continues to grow over the coming months and years.” The company are performing well, with expansion coming, according to CEO, Connor Flanagan.
