TWO men in their 30s have been arrested by gardai this morning as part of an on-going operation targeting the sale and supply of illegal drugs and the possession of firearms in County Clare. As part of the operation, detective and uniform Gardaí from the Clare division carried out searches at a number of properties in the Ennis area. Both men are currently detained at Ennis and Shannon Garda Stations under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007. This operation relates to recent drugs and firearms incidents in Clare and is also related to the seizure of a sub-machine gun, ammunition and approximately €125,000 of suspected cocaine and cannabis herb that were seized in the county in August of last year.

GARDAI have seized approximately €21,700 worth of cannabis, tobacco and cash following a search at a house in Parteen. Shortly before 8am on Saturday Detective Gardaí from Mayorstone Park and Henry Street Garda Stations, with assistance from the Armed Support Unit, executed a search warrant at a house in Parteen. During the course of the search Gardaí seized approximately €15,700 of suspected cannabis, €1,500 worth of tobacco and €4,500 in cash along with drug paraphernalia. The suspected cannabis will now be sent for analysis. No arrests have been made but Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry.

Gardaí investigating the murder of Aidan Kelly on May 10, 2006 at Blackwater, Ardnacrusha,  have arrested a man in his late 30s. He was arrested this morning (Tuesday) and is currently detained at Henry Street Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. Gardaí investigating this incident are appealing to anyone who has information, no matter how insignificant they may think it is, to contact Henry Street Garda Station on (061) 212 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.

FOURTEEN years after his daughter Emer’s life was taken, Johnny O’Loughlin believes the man wanted in connection with her death is at large in Morocco. However, he feels little is being done to investigate the possibility that John Griffin is living in the North African state. This week, Mr O’Loughlin, who is from Ennistymon but now lives in Inagh, spoke about how raw the emotion over the loss of his much-loved daughter still is. Emer was murdered in 2005 and her remains were found in the burned-out mobile home of John Griffin. Mr Griffin was admitted to a psychiatric facility in Ballinasloe following an incident a few days after Emer’s death. He would subsequently check himself out of the facility, apparently attempt to fake his own death on the Aran Islands and has been missing since. Mr O’Loughlin said he has received credible information from an Irishman, who came across Mr Griffin, while in Morocco. While he says the person …

AHEAD of the May Bank Holiday Weekend, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are reminding motorcyclists to ease off the throttle and keep within the speed limit as we enter the high risk summer period for motorcycling. Previous RSA research has shown that bikers speeding is a factor in half (49%) of motorcyclist fatal collisions. Preliminary results from a recent RSA survey of 450 motorcyclists, found that 12% of participants reported having been involved in a road collision in the past two years while three in five (59%) had a near miss in the same period. July was found to be the most dangerous month for collisions involving motorcyclists. The RSA and Gardaí are also highlighting the misuse of quad bikes and scramblers on the road and in public spaces such as parks. An Garda Síochána, in conjunction with the Public Appointments Service, has opened a recruitment competition for Garda trainees. The competition, which is open from this Wednesday (April 3) until 3pm on April 24 2019, is seeking to attract candidates from across society and with a wide-variety of skills to join An Garda Síochána. As of March 31, there are 14,161 members of An Garda Síochána and there is a Government commitment to grow this to 15,000 by 2021. The advertising campaign is based on research with Garda students and new recruits who said they joined An Garda Síochána to help people, because it was not like any other job, and it had great variety. The campaign will feature Garda members in a number of situations where every day skills can transfer into policing. GARDA Declan Fawl has moved to clarify the role he played in the aftermath of a single vehicle crash at Ballycar on Wednesday. “I arrived at the scene after the call came in and at no stage did I pull anyone from a burning car,” he said. He confirmed his role had been limited to making sure the area was safe following the crash, in which a couple and a young child were in a car that overturned. “People were moved to a safe distance, the area was secured and the fire brigade arrived a short time later as the car was alight.” Local woman Aideen O’Hanlon was one of the first people who came upon the accident, in which the three passengers had a lucky escape. “I came onto the scene seconds after it happened. The car was upside down. Myself and two other men went over to help them. The couple were in the front and they crawled …

A SUSPECT device that was discovered at the Clean Ireland Recycling premises in Shannon last week, turned out not to be explosive. Gardai confirmed that while the device was taken away and disposed of, it turned out not to be dangerous and there is no suspected offence to further investigate. Owen Ryan
