Council CEO calls for ‘champions’ in battle against Covid-19

CHAMPIONS are needed in every family and parish across the county in order to win the battle against the coronavirus, according to the CEO of Clare County Council. Making an appeal to the public to continue to stick to government guidelines and to avoid complacency, as Ireland sets out on the road to re-opening, Pat Dowling also thanked the public for their efforts to-date. “We are very grateful for all of the sacrifices everyone has made,” he said. “We understand that there can be slippage and fatigue, but we must continue to comply, and to adapt in order to survive. We have to persevere in order to prevail. We have civil leadership from all of our agencies who continue to collaborate, and who are used to working together for the greater good. Gardaí Ramp Up Policing of Covid Travel Restrictions

GARDAÍ are appealing for continued public compliance with travel restrictions as part of Covid-19 public health guidelines. This week saw a ramped up presence of Gardaí on arterial routes across the country, including those into West and North Clare. Alongside permanent checkpoints which had been in place since Easter, Gardaí have increased the presence of rolling check-points as Operation Fanacht intensified between Tuesday last until the end of the May Bank Holiday. The operation will also see Gardaí conduct high visibility patrols at major tourist locations, parks and natural beauty spots. At any one time, there will be over 2,500 Gardaí involved in checkpoints or high visibility patrolling. Clare Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Tríona Brooks said people were once again being asked to say in their primary residence and not to travel to holiday homes. “If you are found to be travelling to a holiday home or secondary residence you will be turned back,” she said. “In particular, we would …

Missing teenager found safe and well

A 17 year old boy reported as missing in Ennis last week has been found safe and well gardai have confirmed. An appeal had been launched for information on the whereabouts of Daniel Ohiku who had been last seen on April 18. A garda spokesperson stated, “Daniel Ohiku, 17 years, missing from Ennis, Co Clare has been located safe and well. We would like to thank the media and the public for their assistance.”

Gardai seek information on missing Ennis teen

Gardaí in Ennis are seeking the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of Daniel Ohiku, 17 years, who was last seen on Saturday April 18 at his home in Ennis. Daniel is described as being approximately 5’10” in height, of slim build with black curly hair. Anyone with any information on Daniel’s whereabouts or who can assist in locating him are asked to contact Ennis Garda Station on 065 684 8100, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Support for women affected by domestic abuse and violence

WOMEN affected by domestic abuse and domestic violence are finding it more difficult to make contact for support with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic removing “little windows of freedom”, according to Clare Haven. However the local service have assured that they are open and working to protect women and children despite the ongoing health crisis. This comes as Clare Gardai confirmed a number of domestic violence incidences were reported to them last week. Clare Haven Services, which has been supporting women and children affected by Domestic Abuse and Domestic Violence in Co Clare for 25 years, has welcomed as “timely” a new Government awareness and information campaign on domestic violence. Dr Siobhán O’Connor, Manager of Services, said that the campaign comes at a critical time for women and children who may be confined and isolated with their abuser in towns and townlands across the county. Gardai report high levels of lock-down compliance

HIGH levels of public compliance with the near lock-down imposed to tackle the spread of Covid-19 have been reported by one of Clare’s most senior Gardaí. Superintendent John Galvin of Kilrush Garda Station said that since the restrictions on movement came in at midnight last Friday, the main role of the force had been to advise the public on how best to comply with them. In tandem with the regulations instructing those over-70 to remain at home and preventing others from leaving their homes for all but essential work, certain medical appointments and food shopping, a major nationwide policing operation began to ensure compliance with the public health measures. “At this point, almost everyone has realised the seriousness of the situation we are facing with regard to Covid-19,” Superintendent Galvin said. “People are heeding the regulations and our main role to-date has been in advising anyone we encounter on what they can and cannot do. An Garda Síochána have stressed that they will help and support anyone who is a victim of the crime of Domestic Abuse, they should contact their local Garda station or in an emergency call 999/112. An Garda Síochána recognises the increase in anxiety and fear felt by those who may be victims of domestic abuse during this period of Public Health Measures to combat COVID-19. An Garda Síochána is taking this opportunity to reassure victims that domestic abuse incidents, including coercive control, will continue to receive highest priority response for service. The restructuring of An Garda Síochána ensures that there are more Gardaí than ever on the streets and in our communities around the country and we are ready to assist and protect victims of domestic abuse. Fatal car accident in Cratloe

Gardaí are investigating a fatal single vehicle road traffic collision that occurred in the Cratloekeel area of Cratloe at approximately 2:55am this morning. (March 17) An 18 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.
