Teenager questioned over fatal Shannon stabbing

Gardaí in Shannon are questioning a teenager following a fatal stabbing outside The Shannon Knights in the town centre last night. The 23-year-old man was stabbed after an altercation took place between a number of men at the night club around 3am. Two men were injured in the row and taken to University Hospital Limerick. One was subsequently pronounced dead in the hospital a short time later while the second man, a 22-year-old, sustained injuries not believed to be life threatening. A 19-year-old man was arrested a short time later and detained at Shannon Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. A post mortem will take place later today at University Hospital Limerick. Gardaí in Shannon are appealing for witnesses and, in particular, would like to speak with anyone who was in the Shannon Knights nightclub last night. Body found in Ennis

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his early 40s, whose body was discovered in the Gallows Hill area of Ennis today (Friday) at approximately 10am. It is understood that the body was discovered by a passer-by, and it was close to a tree and a side wall at the edge of a green area, which has a pathway running through it. The man had been living locally. Locals were stunned upon hearing of the death. “It’s a lovely quiet area, we’re very surprised to have something like this here,” said one woman. At present the scene is sealed off, while the body has been removed. The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and the Offices of the State Pathologist has been notified. Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, in particular any persons who were in the vicinity of The Turnpike Road/ Gallows Hill are in Ennis between the hours of 10pm on …

Freak accident in Kilkee

An investigation is being carried out at the scene of  a freak traffic accident at Kilkee beach around 3pm this afternoon. It is understood property was being got from a parked car, when it rolled down steps at the car park near the lifeboat station end of the prom. While the seafront and beach was packed, nobody was reported to be injured. The front of the car hit the sand and it remained balanced on the last step. The tide was out at the time but was on the turn. An effort was immediately put in place to recover the car. Kilrush gardaí attended the scene.

Wildfire sparks warning on Wildlife Act breaches

In a week during which a major forest fire has raged  near Oughterard in County Galway, landowners and visitors have been warned to be more careful during this spell of exceptionally dry weather. Minister for Agriculture Food & Marine, Michael Creed and Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys have reminded landowners and the public that it is an offence under Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, 1976 (amended by Section 46 of the Wildlife Act, 2000) to burn, from 1st March to 31st August in any year, any vegetation growing on any land not then cultivated. Individuals who are found to burn vegetation within that prohibited period are liable to prosecution by An Garda Síochána or by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Parachute fatality at Cliffs

It was a bad weekend for accidents in County Clare, in one case a precision parachute jump going astray and resulting in a fatality, and the other involving a serious car crash. The parachute jump incident occurred on Saturday at the Aill Na Searrach section of the Cliffs of Moher. Three men went to the sport to undertake a ‘base jump’, when people jump from a fixed structure or cliff wearing a parachute or wingsuit. The first man completed a safe jump but there was a tragic outcome for the second jumper whose parachute failed. The Irish Coast Guard was alerted, while an ambulance, rapid response advanced paramedic unit and gardaí responded to the scene . With good sea conditions, the Doolin Coast Guard craft was able to get close enough to the cliff base to allow three members make their way ashore. Tragedy on our roads

CRUSHEEN teenager Delia Keary has become the fourth Clare person to die as a result of road traffic accidents in recent days. The 18 year old had been a passenger in a car which collided with a truck at Wards Cross near Abbeyfeale on Friday evening. 19 year old Gary Kelly from Ennis died at the scene while Delia was taken to University Hospital, Limerick for treatment. However Gardai have confirmed that she passed away on Saturday night. Newcastle West Gardai are investigating the incident and they have appealed to witnesses to contact them on 069 20650, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station. Also the funeral takes place on Monday of Clare native Paul Hannon, who lost his life after he was involved in a collision with a car while cycling in Dublin on Friday morning. Gardaí investigate armed robbery

AN investigation has been launched following an armed robbery at a filling station on the outskirts of Ennis on Sunday night. Gardaí are appealing to the public for information after two men dressed in dark clothes entered the Maxol filling station at Clareabbey roundabout at around 10pm. One of the men was carrying what appeared to have been a handgun, while the other man was armed with a crowbar. A member of staff was tied up by the men who got away with a sum of cash. There were no injuries during the incident. Gardaí in Ennis are anxious to speak to anybody who may have seen anything suspicious in the area between 9.30pm and 10.30pm. Six drink-driving detections over Christmas

SIX people have been detected drink driving in Clare over the Christmas period, with two of these being during the day time. Of the six drink drivers, one was detected at 9.20am on Monday, December 19 and another at lunchtime on December 21. Two were detected in the early hours of December 28. Although the drink-driving figures for the month of December to date show a “significant increase” in those driving while under the influence of alcohol, locally the statistics are down one on last year for the Christmas period. On December 1, An Garda Síochána and the RSA launched the Christmas and new year anti-drink driving campaign. This was heavily publicised across all broadcast mediums, particularly social media, and was fronted by the Treacy family, who tragically lost their four-year-old son Ciarán in a road traffic collision involving a drunk driver.
