Cash rolling in for Clare sports projects

CLARE is receiving over €8.2 million under phase 2 of the Community Sport Facilities Fund. Some €7.3 million is going to sporting organisations in communities around Clare, while another €940,000 is going to regional projects. The Clare District Soccer League has got over €410,000 for the upgrading of Frank Healy Park. Clare GAA is getting €478,668 for the All Weather Pitch at its Centre of Excellence. In Clarecastle the GAA club is to get €200,000 for the provision of floodlighting on its main pitch, while Clarecastle Sports Complex is to get €50,000. Over €195,000 is being provided for an astro turf development at Ennis Community College, while Feakle GAA is to get over €191,000 for the first phase of its clubhouse development. These are only some of the largest winners, with dozens of projects across Clare getting allocations. CDSL hits out at “mindless vandalism” at Frank Healy Park

The Clare District Soccer League (CDSL) has been left frustrated by repeated acts of vandalism at Frank Healy Park. The Doora based facility has been repeatedly targeted by vandals for a year. Since last summer, fencing has been destroyed, doors broken and the mail box repeatedly damaged. The acts of vandalism started when a door into a storage area of the dressing rooms was broken in to roughly a year ago. This has led to a progression of incidents which has left those involved in Clare soccer deeply frustrated. On Monday, the CDSL published a statement about the repeated intrusions at the County Grounds when the home dressing room door was severely damaged. The statement by the CDSL notes: “Finally this morning the home dressing room door was discovered to have been broken in. This is simply mindless vandalism as nothing of any significant value is kept in these buildings. They are dressing rooms and a small kitchen, noting more. …

Council gives cold shoulder to request for Ennis footpath

THE lack of a footpath and street lights near a popular local sports grounds used by hundreds of children and adults is “a serious accident waiting to happen”, an Ennis councillor has warned. Those attending events at Frank Healy Park, Ballaghboy, have to walk on a grass verge alongside a road if they want to get to a local shop, a meeting of Ennis Municipal District heard. Councillor Mary Howard has seen children walking on the grass verge close to the road where cars were speeding by, saying, “it frightens me to see”. While the Ennis Municipal District has said the proposal “has merit”, the local authority says it cannot be done as part of the annual works programme. Land acquisition, construction of embankments and the diversion of large culverts would need to be completed to allow the footpath go ahead. Clare’s defence of Oscar Traynor title begins

FRANK Healy Park in Doora will be the venue on Saturday evening at 5pm for the opening game in this season’s Oscar Traynor Cup. Clare will begin the defence of the title, won impressively last year, when they take on Galway with a side that will be drawn from a panel similar to that which won the title. The sides met last year in Eamonn Deacy Park in Galway, where they played a 1-1 draw. Clare are again be under the management of Donie Garrihy and his backroom team of David Russell and Denis Hynes. “There is no talk about defending titles or achieving back-to-back successes. This is a new campaign and we have some new players. This is the first game in a four-team group and Galway will be difficult opponents.
