BALLINA’S Finn McGeever is set to compete at the FINA World Short Course Championships in Abu Dhabi, writes Ivan Smyth. McGeever represented his country at the Olympic Games as he was part of the first Irish men’s relay team to swim at the Games when he competed in the 4x200m. Selection for the World Championships cap what has been an excellent year for the Ballina man as he is currently the Irish senior record holder in the 400m freestyle and was part of the Irish team that reached the European Championship final in Budapest earlier this year. He is the youngest son of Róisín and Charlie. The 21 year old is a past pupil of St Anne’s Community College. McGeever features among a strong Irish team that includes seven Olympians, with Tokyo 2020 Olympic finalist Mona McSharry among those selected. ROISÍN McGeever never anticipated the sheer size of the crowd who turned out to welcome her son, Finn, back from the Toyko Olympics last week. “I didn’t expect the numbers for one person. People in Ballina and Killaloe felt that qualifying for the Olympics was huge. I don’t think it has sunk in with us yet. “We didn’t know until the Tuesday before he went he was going. Before they lined up for the race, I wasn’t sure they were going to swim. All you needed was one swimmer to have a positive Covid-19 test. “If you couldn’t go to Toyko there was no better place to be than watching the race on the big screen in Ballina. “When Finn came on the starting block everyone roared. A BALLINA swimmer says the “amazing” Olympic experience and homecoming will provide him with additional motivation to to and qualify for the Paris Olympics in 2024. Finn McGeever is still taken aback by the rousing reception he received from people who lined the streets of the twin communities of Ballina and Killaloe to welcome him home from the Tokyo Olympics last week. FINN McGeever made history this afternoon as part of the Irish 4x200m swim relay team that took to the water in the Olympic Games, writes Ivan Smyth. While the team did not progress from their heat, the former pupil of St Anne’s Community College and his colleagues did themselves proud, being part of the first Irish swim relay team to compete in an Olympics in 49 years. A Lough Derg swimmer scaled the heights at the Irish National Team trials by recording his first individual senior record. Dominating the 400 metre Freestyle Final in an impressive performance, Finn McGeever finished on 3.52.83 in the Irish National Swimming Championship, which smashed Northern Ireland’s Jack McMillian’s 2019 record of 3.53.31 In fact, the Ballina swimmer achieved success on the double with his second place finish in the semi-final and third place in the final of the 200 metre freestyle, placing him in a strong position to secure a coveted place on the Irish 4×200 metre relay team for the next Olympics Games.
