A GROUP of Clare artists have been brushing up on their digital skills, bringing their latest exhibition of artworks on-line. The Inis Artists as a group have been in existence for more than 20 years and are noted for their extensive touring art exhibitions. In a normal year they would be involved in up to 14 different group exhibitions all over the country. However, this is not a normal year and all of their art exhibition venues are closed due to Covid-19, except Skycourt in Shannon. In order to bring their artwork to the public, they have come up with the idea of holding a virtual art exhibition. Calling it their ‘Spring Lockdown Exhibition 2020’ it displays the new work of their artists. Tomás O’Maoldomhnaigh PRO Inis Artists explains that much of the work reflects the artists’ emotions in this time of social distancing and lockdown. The virtual exhibition can be viewed on facebook.com/inis.artists Inis Artists were founded back in …

GROWING up a Catholic in Loyalist- dominated Newtownabbey on the fringes of Belfast in the late 1960s and early 1970s meant an uneasy childhood for Kilkishen- based artist Anne Stewart. So traumatic was it that after leaving she didn’t return to the area for over 40 years, until she made a trip back there in 2018, but she has used the difficulties of her early life for inspiration for a new exhibition, Memories of Displacement in a Divided Community, which goes on display at Scariff Library this Thursday. The majority of the exhibition consists of pictures of the pupils of her alma mater, Stella Maris in Newtownabbey, who lost their lives during the bloody conflict. “There is one portrait of Bobby Sands from a photograph; the rest are distorted photographs of the students,” she says. On Tuesday, she was busy closing off sources of natural light at the library, so that viewers will get a real sense of the work when …

Participants of the Embrace for Arts & People with Disabilities Programme have been taking advantage of the fine spell of weather by relocating to Dromore Woods to create environmental art works with artist and facilitator, Alan Shoosmith. Run by Clare County Arts Office and supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, the Embrace Programme for Arts and People with Disabilities provides opportunities for individuals to engage with a wide range of art forms. With just three weeks to go until the annual Embrace event at Glór, members of the Dulick group have been creating environmental pieces to showcase at the exhibition. Each ephemeral art work is created using elements such as wood, flowers, grass and berries which are gathered on site and also through engaging creatively with the surrounding environment. The finished works will be photographed before being exhibited in glór. This year’s Embrace Arts and People with Disabilities exhibition and performance event will be held on May 9 at …

This unique free pop up exhibition will help people to understand what it would be like if they could not read or see words clearly or could not understand what people are saying because they couldn’t comprehend their language. Supported by the Department of Justice, it will simulate an experience of what is like not being able to hear directions because a person can only hear all the surrounding noise and can’t communicate using their voice. It will show what is like to be hungry but not wanting to eat because …

AN exhibition by Crusheen musician, photographer and raconteur has gone on display in Glór for the duration of the Fleadh and will give visitors a snapshot of the many great musicians and characters to have come out of the county. The photography exhibit, entitled Where the Heart Lies, features more than 40 original photographs, many unseen, as well as others which don the walls in the homes of household names such as Brad Pitt. He has taken the title, as well as some of the photographs, from a book of the same name which he produced with Peter Woods 20 years ago. Christy explains that he relied on this idea, Where the Heart Lies, because it was something that was emotive for him. “When you think about where your heart lies it’s home and it’s place”, and he said this idea of home is where the heart lies is what he wanted to convey in this exhibit.
