DONALD Trump may be a divisive figure but efforts must be made to protect the dunes of Doonbeg, while nearby farmlands remain “under threat” from flooding. William Hanrahan, IFA county chairman, told the monthly meeting of Clare County Council that flood protection is a major issue for the county, with the IFA “intensively” lobbying the OPW and government departments for funding to complete outstanding works. “In some areas, planning permission is required and IFA would urge Clare County Council to wholeheartedly support these projects, whether it is on the banks of the Shannon or the Atlantic coast,” he said. For the third time in recent weeks an injury time point has kept Clondegad’s senior football championship hopes alive.  At Kilmihil on Saturday, Paudge McMahon converted a free in the sixth minute of ‘injury time’ to force a replay with Doonbeg in their quarter final tie. It was a result most will argue was deserved as they had wasted a lot of scoring opportunities throughout a tie in which they trailed by two points at half time. At the same venue holders and favourites Kilmurry-Ibrickane overcame Eire Og but they were given a much sterner test than many had expected. PLANS for a 28,000 tonne rock barrier to protect parts of the Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg have been hit by a fresh three-month delay. As a result, it is likely that a decision by Clare County Council on the planning application will not now be made until early next year. This follows the Trump family-owned firm, TIGL Ireland Enterprises Ltd seeking, and securing, a three-month extension from Clare County Council in which to respond to a raft of further information requests for the contentious plan to install a 28,000 tonne rock barrier to protect “as a matter of urgency” holes 1, 9 and 18 at the links course. The council requested the information across five pages in February and the golf resort’s deadline for replying is due to expire next Tuesday. Nine prestigious International Blue Flag status has been awarded to Clare beaches, including Whitestrand, Miltown Malbay, Ballycuggeran, Whitestrand Doonbeg, Mountshannon, Cappa, Fanore, Spanish Point, Kilkee and Lahinch. Green Coast Awards were also awarded to the beaches at Bishops Quarter (Ballyvaughan), Seafield (Quilty) and for the first time, Ballyalla Lake. Tourism Ireland has unveiled a new online film for St Patrick’s Day 2017, to encourage prospective holidaymakers to come and visit Ireland this year. The 60-second film includes wonderful footage shot around Ireland, including the Cliffs of Moher, interwoven with some great images from Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative, which sees hundreds of famous landmarks and iconic sites across the globe illuminated in green each year to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on this Friday. The film is being promoted through Tourism Ireland’s social platforms, including Facebook with 3.8 million fans worldwide; Twitter with 379,000 followers and YouTube. Last month, Tourism Ireland announced details of some of the famous attractions and sites around the world which will join its Global Greening initiative this year to mark St Patrick’s Day. The tenth annual O’Gorman cup senior football tournament will get underway on Saturday next, February 25. Ten teams will take part and they are divided into two groups of five which means that all participants will have a minimum of four games. The competition will be played on a home and away basis with the final going ahead in Doonbeg as Doonbeg GAA host the tournament. In group 1 next week St. Josephs (Doora-Barefield) will entertain Cooraclare and Ennistymon will have home advantage against Miltown with O’Currys having a bye. In group 2.St. Breckans will play Kilrush and Kilmihil will entertain competition title holders Lissycasey while Doonbeg have a bye. Current members of the Clare senior football panel cannot play in this competition Round 2 is set for March 4.

ONE of the world’s leading newspapers has cited US President Donald Trump’s unsuccessful attempts to build a coastal defence barrier at his Doonbeg golf resort as a major influence in forming his approach towards the European Union. Washington Post writer Griff Witte has written, “For a man who loves to win, the defeat, just a month after his election as president, has left a bitter taste. And despite the motley nature of the resistance, Trump seems to have singled out a lone culprit: the European Union, whose rules and regulations underpinned many of the objections.” The article was headlined Trump tried and failed to build a wall in Ireland. AHEAD of Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th President of the United States on Friday, Doonbeg parish priest Fr Joe Haugh has offered his unequivocial backing to the New York-based billionaire. In a joint interview with The Times [UK] and German newspaper Bild, US President-elect Trump said Doonbeg was a “magnificent property” but added that “now, I couldn’t care less about it”. He made his comment in the context of his frustrations with EU bureaucracy. “They were using environmental tricks to stop a project from being built. I found it to be a very unpleasant experience. To get the approvals from the EU would have taken years. I don’t think that’s good for a country like Ireland,” he commented. However, Fr Haugh insists that Mr Trump’s comments were not demeaning towards his business in West Clare. “Doonbeg is now out of his agenda. He has to concentrate on the USA. That’s what he means.
