Kilmurry Ibrickane 2-9 Doonbeg 1-8 THE mid Winter evening of December 9, 2016 will be fondly remembered in the history of Kilmurry Ibrickane GAA club. Last Friday in Kilmihil, Kilmurry added their sixth successive Cusack Cup to the senior championship and U/21 titles already won. That they did so was largely thanks to 1-2 from play, all in the second half, from centre back Martin McMahon. Interestingly, while McMahon was definitely the most influential player on view, he was challenged for player of the match by second half substitute Declan Callinan, who won several breaks, in the Kilmurry half back line. Kilmurry played their best football in the second half, having been out played for much of the opening half hour. Doonbeg led 1-3 to 0-4 at half-time but they were dealt a huge blow five minutes before the interval, when Colm Dillon was black carded for a late shoulder on Ciaran Morrissey. SIXTEEN days before Christmas Day and nine months after the Cusack Cup started on March 19, the league, which consists of seven rounds before the top three are finalised, will conclude in Kilmihil on Friday evening. When referee John Hannon throws the ball in for the 2016 final, two fierce rivals will shorten the winter’s evening as they go in search of the cup, €2,000 in prize money for the victors from The Clare Champion and a winning conclusion to their footballing year. Kilmurry are seeking an unprecedented six in-a-row, a feat never achieved by any club. Kilmurry have won 10 Cusack Cups up to now, while Doonbeg have 14 on the sideboard but none since 1994. Kilmurry have enjoyed a superb year, winning their 14th senior championship and 13th U-21 title, while their minors and juniors also reached their respective county finals. AS Sunday’s U-21A county football final nears, Kilmurry Ibrickane and Lissycasey are approaching with a common agenda, yet a vastly contrasting record at this level. While Lissycasey are seeking their first U-21A title, Kilmurry have already put 13 on their sideboard, although none since they completed five in-a-row in 2007. They were beaten in the 2008 replay by St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield. This weekend’s final in Corofin will represent Lissycasey’s third at this level, having won successive minor A championships in 2013 and 2014. They lost their previous U-21 finals to Kilmurry Ibrickane and Ennistymon. En route to the final, Lissycasey have beaten Cooraclare, reigning champions Éire Óg and Kilmihil/Shannon Gaels in last Friday’s semi-final. Kilmurry will field for the fifth successive weekend, having defeated Kilrush-Killimer, St Breckan’s (replay) and Ennistymon in the semi-final. WHILE much focus has been on whether US President Elect Donald Trump will progress with his pre-election promise to build a wall between Mexico and the US, he has until the end of 2016 to respond to Clare County Council’s demand for more information on his proposed Doonbeg wall. Following extensive flooding, significant repair work had to be carried out at the golf course in Doonbeg, which was re-opened last May. “The proposed rock berm is the subject of a planning application to Clare County Council by TIGL Enterprises Ireland Ltd. A request for further information has been issued to the applicant, which has until December 31 to reply. In the meantime, Clare County Council is not in a position to make any comment on the proposed development while the application process is ongoing,” the local authority said on Wednesday. WHILE Trump’s victory isn’t being warmly received throughout Europe, in Doonbeg the victory of the village’s biggest investor is being lauded. Local businessman Tommy Tubridy said it is the right result for Doonbeg and Clare. “I think its going to be very good for business, I think it’s going to be very good for the people of West Clare and the whole county in general. “I definitely think it will bring more Americans into West Clare, through Shannon, so it will be a boost for Shannon as well. A lot of his supporters have been coming through there  over the last 12 months. We find that a lot of Trump supporters come to Doonbeg,” he commented on Wednesday morning. He had stayed up all night watching coverage of the election and said numerous journalists had been in touch about the Doonbeg reaction once the result was known. Further information is being sought in relation to a planning application for a development comprising €10 million coastal erosion management works at and adjacent to Carrowmore Dunes, White Strand, Doughmore Bay and Trump International Golf Links and Hotel, Doonbeg. A planning application was made to Clare County Council on May 10, 2016 in relation to the development works by Trump International Golf Links (TIGL) Ireland Enterprises Ltd. It had been speculated that Clare County Council was set to grant planning permission for the 2.8km limestone coastal protection wall today (Monday). Whatever the decision at this stage, is is certain to be appealed, with the likelihood of an oral hearing.

IN a statement issued late on Friday afternoon, Clare County Council said that “further information is being sought” in relation to proposed coastal erosion management works at Doughmore Beach, next to Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg. The planning application from Trump Doonbeg, to build a 2.8km, 200,000 tonne limestone wall was submitted on May 10 and a decision was due next Monday. In their statement, Clare County Council did not say when a decision on the planning application will now be made. Clare County Council received 112 submissions by the June 13 submission deadline relating to the proposed construction of the coastal erosion works. Approximately 67% of the submissions backed the proposal which Eric Trump claimed, on a visit to Doonbeg on May 15, was necessary if the business in West Clare is to survive. A SPOKESPERSON for Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg has told The Clare Champion that a weekend visit from presumptive US Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump is “unlikely”. The owner of the West Clare golfing resort said two weeks ago that he was going to stop off in Doonbeg, following a three-day visit to Scotland, which will coincide with the re-opening of Trump Turnberry. He purchased that business in 2014 and has since renovated it, at an estimated cost of €250m. Trump purchased Doonbeg, which was in receivership at the time, in early 2014. He is also expected to visit another of his Scottish golf properties in Aberdeen this week. ‘Trump Not Welcome’ campaigners, opposed to a potential visit to Ireland by the billionaire businessman, held a press conference in Dublin on Wednesday to announce details of a protest, should the New Yorker announce a last-minute visit while on his trip to the UK. “The message is that if he …
