One last walk with Conor Flanagan

A large crowd is expected in Ennistymon next Sunday for a charity walk in memory of the late Conor Flanagan. Mr Flanagan, who passed away suddenly in May of last year, was an avid walker and raised tens of thousands of Euro for various different charities through walking and swimming. He was also a recovering addict, and he used his walking as a way to help other people who were struggling to conquer their own demons. All funds raised from the walk will be used to purchase a defibrillator that will be located in the Clouna area of North Clare. “Conor, in his life, walked thousands of miles for charity. So many friends reached out to us [after his passing] and said, when we were ready, that they would like to have a walk for him. We are thrilled and delighted to honour Conor in this way,” said Conor’s sister, Ann Marie Flanagan. “Thinking through the tragedy of the night …

Ballina Handball Club has installed a new defibrillator costing an estimated €1,600 on the outside wall of their handball alley for the benefit of the club and residents. This latest initiative is part of the club’s drive to increase the provision of facilities for the benefit of the local national school and the local community. The first part of this drive was the introduction of dads and lads as well as mothers and others in the handball alley to encourage people to engage in a fun physical exercise without the commitment of training for or entering a competition. This started about three weeks ago and already it is proving very popular with people who never played handball previously. Teaming up with Defibs for Life in Nenagh, the club contacted this organisation who was delighted to supply a defibrillator on the proviso they would receive a donation. Club Chairman, Paddy Collins explained a defibrillator is essential for a club and the …

New defibrillator the first step in planned rejuvenation of Ruan

A new defibrillator was installed in Ruan GAA pitch on Monday, as part of a local initiative to rejuvenate the area. Francis Lyons, the Assistant Treasurer for the GAA club and a coach at underage level, explained that a lot of work has been done around the pitch to develop its facilities. The prior defibrillator at the pitch was old and in need of repair and replacement batteries, and the work involved in bringing it back up to scratch was found to be cost ineffective by the club. Francis took the responsibility of reaching out to the locality and to acquaintances in health and safety firms to learn what could be done instead. “The defibrillator was a matter closer to my heart,” he said. “I had a friend who had to be treated with a defibrillator in Ennis only a few months back, and only for it he would not be here now. So the importance of the defibrillator really …
