IT was a night of remembering times past at Cannys Bar on Saturday, when Killanena GAA Club honoured the members of the junior championship-winning team from 1977. All members of the squad, with the exception of Chicago-based Michael Leonard and the late Denis Sammon and Joe Horan, were in attendance. It was a particularly memorable year for the club, as they won the junior A championship, beating Corofin in a replay in the final, while they also won the 1976 league title, in a final played in 1977. Special guest was former Clare selector and manager, Tony Considine, who recalled that campaign in detail and many of the games between his native Cratloe and Killanena in the 1970s. Brian Borus was a very successful amalgamation in the ’70s with Bodyke, Tulla and Killanena coming together to form a senior team, which won the county senior championship title in 1975. Corofin man Joe Killen takes over as the new president of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation today (Wednesday) at their annual congressin Killarney. Joe Killeen, who is principal in Lough Cutra NS, Gort since 1987began his teaching career at Kiltrusten NS, Strokestown, County Roscommon. Joe became Gort Branch Secretary in 1987 and represented Gort INTO Branch and District 6 of the INTO (Galway/Roscommon) for over 20 years. In 2008 he was elected to the Central Executive Committee of the union to represent INTO District 6. He represented District 6 on the Small Schools Task Force set up in 2012 by the union to advise the executive on opposing proposals by the Department of Education and Skills to close small schools. Joe is also actively involved in a range of community, rural, cultural and sporting organisations. He comes to the role at a time of industial unrest among primary and secondary teachers over pay inequality.

Minister for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market & Data Protection Pat Breen has announced that €63,000 has been granted to Clare for agricultural shows next year. “This €63,000 will be a huge benefit to the nine shows in County Clare who will each receive a grant of €7,000 each. The Clare shows include Kildysart, Kilrush, Clarecastle, Corofin, Ennistymon, Mullagh, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Bridgetown and Scarriff. “This funding is particularly useful to the smaller shows that are susceptible to weather and other unexpected costs that can occur,” said Minister Breen. “Agricultural shows are hugely important to the rural economy, with surrounding towns and villages benefitting hugely from each show. “The Government considers this funding an important investment in rural communities and I am delighted that my colleague Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring has granted this funding for Clare,” he said

Corofin man Joe Killeen is the new vice-president of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO). The principal of Lough Cutra National School, near Gort, was elected to the post at last weekend’s annual congress in Belfast. The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation has in excess of 43,000 members, of which 7,300 reside in Northern Ireland. Its members teach in the region of 600,000 pupils. Mr Killeen began his teaching career at Kiltrusten National School in Strokestown, County Roscommon, and became principal at Lough Cutra in 1987. In the same year, he became Gort INTO branch secretary. He went on to represent the Gort INTO branch and District 6 of the INTO (Galway/Roscommon) for over 20 years. In 2008, he was elected to the central executive committee of the union to represent INTO District 6, which has a membership of 2,500 teachers. History was made at Cusack Park this Good Friday evening as Feakle-Killanena won the county under 21 A championship title for the first time in the club’s history while Corofin captured their first ever title at this level when they were victorious in the C final. In both cases the defending champions were defeated, Inagh-Kilnamona in the A and Scariff in the C in a double bill that attracted an attendance of 1, 526. Feakle-Killanena 0-16 Inagh-Kilnamona 1-13 Feakle-Killanena showed the greater hunger for success over the sixty minutes in an A final that never really reached the heights expected. Overall, the East Clare combination were better and deserved their narrow win on an evening when they managed to limit the contribution of Inagh-Kilnamona’s key players. A CAMPAIGN is underway in Corofin to erect a permanent memorial marking the famous march of the 40 shilling freeholders from the village to Ennis to vote for Daniel O’Connell in the 1828 Clare Election. The freeholders were led by the parish priest of Corofin, 39-year-old Fr John Murphy, a native of Newmarket-on-Fergus, who became a central figure in the election of Daniel O’Connell as MP for Clare, an event which subsequently led to Catholic Emancipation in 1829. In Corofin Community Hall recently, a special night was devoted to the memory of Fr John Murphy by Cumann Staire is Dúchais Chora Finne. The night included a lecture on Fr Murphy, who was parish priest in Corofin from 1818 to 1831, by the association’s chairperson Declan Kelleher and a talk on his biographer, Fr Denis Spellissy, by its president Dr Maccon MacNamara. “The Clare election of 1828 was in itself a statement of defiance from a downtrodden people, who put their necks on …

  Kilmihil-based GP Michael Harty has been selected as the official Clare GP candidate to contest the forthcoming general election. The Clare Champion can reveal that Dr Harty will officially launch his general election campaign for a “rural revolution” at a public meeting in Corofin community hall this Tuesday night at 8pm. Speaking to the Clare Champion, Dr Harty confirmed he has been selected as the “no doctor, no village” candidate as part of GPs national campaign to restore vital financial supports to rural practice. While no other doctors have officially announced they are making a Dáil bid, Dr Harty may be joined by other medical colleagues supporting this national campaign in Galway, Mayo and other counties in the West of Ireland over the coming days. Beaten finalists twelve months ago, Corofin have bounced back to win the intermediate football title. At sunny Hennessy Park in Miltown on Saturday afternoon, their ability to score goals proved too much for Kilmihil who led by the minimum margin at the mid point. The winners goals came from John Keane (2), Luke O’Loughlin and Damian Ryan and sealed a merited win which has earned them the right to represent Clare in the Provincial championship and they will begin this campaign in November. Meanwhile, Miltown St. Josephs booked their place in this season’s Clare senior football championshio final with a two goal victory over St. Breckans in the first of this year’s semi-finals, played in beautiful conditions at Cusack Park on Saturday afternoon.
