Gardai are treating as suspicious a fire at a house in Corofin which resulted in two people having to be taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. The fire occurred around 8am this morning at the house at Gort Road and gardai have since completed a technical examination of the scene. Several units of the fire brigade and two ambulances from Ennis responded to the incident. Both men, one a pensioner who lived at the house, and a man who helped rescue him from the property, were treated with oxygen at the scene before being removed to hospital.

Bodyke 3-9 Corofin 0-16 Bodyke bridged a thirty year gap at Cusack Park on Friday evening when they captured the county under 21 C championship title at the expense of Corofin. The East Clare club recorded their only previous success in this championship in 1985 when they overcame the challenge of Crusheen. Corofin boys, Ronan Cahill and Conor Farrell have been chosen as two of the best young artists in Ireland at Sightsavers Junior Painter of the Year Awards 2015. Ronan and Conor, both aged 10, attend Scoil Mhuire National School. Ronan’s painting entitled ‘I want you to see my portable house’ and Conor’s painting entitled ‘I want you to see Morgan, my crazy elephant’ were inspired by this year’s competition theme, ‘I want you to see…’ and were regional winners in the special needs and 3rd and 4th class categories respectively. With thousands of entries from over 200 primary schools nationwide, Ronan and Conor are two of the 15 finalists that will have their paintings displayed at an awards ceremony in Dublin in March where the overall national winners will be selected. A  North Clare group collected their prize of €556,194 in National Lottery offices in Dublin on Tuesday (November 4). The “Rum for Me” syndicate, so-called as spiced rum is their drink of choice, raised a glass to celebrate their big win after matching five numbers and one lucky star number in last Tuesday’s EuroMillions draw. The lucky group comprises seven winners, aged 26 to 55, who live and work in the Lisdoonvarna, Corofin and Doolin areas. The group members have decided not to release their names. “We started this syndicate just six weeks ago”, said a member of the group. “Each week, we won small amounts and today’s winning ticket was bought with the money we’d won the week before.” The winners have lots of interesting plans for the win. “I’m going to pay for the damage I did to my father’s car this summer’, said one; another said he intends to pursue a career in 3-D animation; another member …

THERE will be no financial compensation for those affected by recent water restrictions in North and West Clare, Clare County Council and Irish Water have said. The Kildysart and Corofin public water supplies were both subject to restrictions, following separate incidents. Councillor Christy Curtin requested a report on them at a recent meeting of the West Clare Municipal Area, which now includes Corofin and other parts of North Clare. He asked that the report outline the “arrangements with Irish Water for a water rates rebate to the affected customers”. He expressed his confidence in local authority staff but said “the jury is out on Irish Water”, after a council official outlined the work carried out to monitor and restore the water supply to the two areas recently. Carmel Greene, senior executive officer at the Water Services Department in the council, gave a lengthy written response. While the drinking water restrictions which applied to Kildysart, Coolmeen, Corofin and Ruan were lifted over the weekend, there is disquiet in the North Clare area as Inchiquin Lake still remains out of bounds. Clare Council, in consultation with the HSE, said the lake, a huge amenity attraction, close to Corofin, “remains closed to the public as is not suitable for recreational purposes. Signage has been erected notifying the public of the ongoing closure at the lake.” On August 14, approximately 1800 customers were advised, as a precautionary measure, that water in Corofin town and its environs, Ruan village and the area served by the Killeen Group Water Scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the presence of an algal bloom in Inchiquin Lake. Clare County Council has explained how customers in the affected area are now being provided with an alternative supply via the Dysart-Toonagh Group Water Scheme and Ennis Public Water Supply Scheme. CLARE County Council has confirmed the removal of drinking water restrictions which were affecting 3,300 customers in Kildysart, Coolmeen, Corofin and Ruan. The restrictions were in place in Kildysart and Coolmeen since July 29 and in Corofin and Ruan since August 14. Approximiately 1,500 customers of the Kildysart Public Water Supply scheme were advised as a precautionary measure that water on the scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the discolouration of the water caused by increased manganese levels. However, extensive testing of the water provided by the Kildysart Public Water Supply scheme has shown that the water being supplied continues to meet the drinking water standards. All water restrictions have been lifted as a result. In the middle of this month 1,800 customers were advised, as a precautionary measure, that water in Corofin town and its environs, Ruan village and the area served by the Killeen Group Water Scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the presence of an algal …

The existing water restrictions in Corofin and Ruan will remain in place until at least Friday, Clare County Council has confirmed. On Thursday evening last  ( August 14), approximately 1,800 customers were advised, as a precautionary measure, that water in Corofin town and its environs, Ruan village and the area served by the Killeen Group Water Scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the presence of an algal bloom in Inchiquin Lake. Customers are being advised that the water supply should not be used until further notice except for the flushing of toilets, flushing of internal house plumbing systems and laundry. Customers are also advised to discard ice cubes in fridges and freezers. It is also advised that the water should not be used for personal hygiene such as showering and the brushing of teeth. Drinking water tankers are being provided outside Bofey Quinns Pub, St Patrick’s Community Hall, the Grotto, opposite Kerry Agri (Corofin) and adjacent to the Dalcassion Pub (Ruan). …
