Strong to near gale force and gusty southeast to south winds on Tuesday morning and afternoon. WHILE Clare was under a red alert for a number of hours last Friday morning, the damage wasn’t as bad as had been feared, but on Sunday Storm Franklin caused more problems than had been expected, writes Owen Ryan. There was an orange order in place in the county for much of the day, and Cormac Falvey of the county’s fire service said that there had been a number of calls, although there was little structural damage. “There was nothing special really, there were 20 storm related calls from 10am on Sunday until 1am on Monday. The peak of that was from 17.00 and 19.00. Due to the Status Red wind warning issued by Met Éireann for Clare between 3am until 8am on Friday February 18, all outpatient appointments and elective procedures in Ennis Hospital are being cancelled. Impacted patients are being contacted directly by Ennis Hospital. THE Department of Education is advising that schools in county Clare stay closed on Friday February 18 due to the Status Red wind warning. The department stated that remote teaching and learning should commence where possible, in line with schools’ remote teaching and learning plans. It also advised schools to keep up to date with the current weather warnings which are carried on all national and local news bulletins and in particular any change in the status warning for their area. Also, due to the weather warning all Bus Éireann services in County Clare will be suspended on Friday morning, February 18, between 1am until 10am. A YELLOW wind warning has been issued for Clare and other west coast counties this Wednesday. Westerly winds associated with Storm Dudley will reach mean speeds of 50 – 65km/h with damaging gusts of 80 – 110km/h, stronger on exposed coasts and on high ground. A combination of high tide and strong winds will lead to some coastal flooding. On Friday, a second named storm, Eunice, will bring more widespread strong winds, along with spells of heavy rain and possibly snow.
