Heart-breaking evidence on day one of Caitríona Lucas inquest

Harrowing evidence of the final moments of North Clare woman and Irish Coast Guard volunteer, Caitríona Lucas, who died while assisting in a search and rescue operation off the west coast, seven years ago, was given by her crew mates at the start of her inquest today. It was accepted that Ms Lucas, of the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard, was assisting members of Kilkee Coast Guard unit because they were short of volunteers. She was the first Coast Guard member to die on active duty. The 41-year old librarian and mother-of-two might have had survived had she still been wearing her safety helmet that had earlier been ripped off her by a wave, when she was struck by the Kilkee RIB and smashed against rocks off Kilkee Bay, it was heard. Marty’s mum driving to ‘safety of her son’ when she died in crash

Ninety-four-year-old Peggy Morrissey died after her car crashed into a field “on a very bad night storm-wise” while she was en route to the safety of her son, RTE broadcaster, Marty Morrissey, an inquest has heard. At the County Clare Coroner’s court in Kilrush, Marty Morrissey stated that he agreed with his mother, Peggy that she would stay with him at the Old Ground hotel in Ennis on the night of December 6 last year as Storm Barra was due to hit the west coast of Clare the following day. In a deposition, Mr Morrissey told the coroner’s court that he last spoke to Peggy at 11.36pm on December 6 by phone before she set off in her Silver Renault Clio and the two arranged that they would meet at the village of Inagh before journeying onto Ennis. Heartbroken family seek answers after son’s death in car blaze

An 18-year-old Leaving Cert student died in a car crash in Cratloe in south east Clare less than one hour after kissing his mother on the cheek good night and telling her that he loved her. At the inquest in Clare into the death of John Daly, John’s mother, Linda Daly said that there remains unanswered questions around the lead-up to her son’s death. John died 150 metres from his home when his father Sean’s car, that he was driving, burst into flames after it crashed at a level crossing at around 2.55am on the morning of St Patrick’s Day 2020. John had attended a party at a friend’s house earlier that evening and got a lift home with a friend’s father, Pat Horgan.
