Gardai probe hit and run incident in Clare’s county town

Gardaì are appealing for witnesses to a traffic collision that occurred three weeks ago in Clare’s county town. The gardai are investigating a hit and run traffic collision that occurred at approximately 3pm on Saturday, May 15, at the Gort Road Roundabout. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a grey Range Rover. Both cars involved were travelling from the Ennis direction approaching the Gort Road Roundabout. A white Opel Insignia was on the inside lane turning right for the Gort Road. The grey Range Rover was on the outside lane and was heading into Shiels filling station/McDonalds, this vehicle collided into the side of the Opel causing extensive damage. If anyone saw anything suspicious or has dash cam footage, they are asked to contact Ennis Garda Station on 065-6848100.

File to be sent to DPP as six arrested in Clare released

The six people arrested in County Clare on Tuesday in connection with an ongoing operation targeting suspected organised crime have since been released. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. As part of the operation uniform and detective Gardaí from the Clare Division arrested six people in Ennis and the West Clare area on Tuesday of this week. The six people, five men and one woman, were detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007 at Ennis, Shannon and Kilrush Garda Stations. This suspected organised crime group are believed to be involved in the theft of catalytic converters and the sale of the precious metals contained within.

Six arrests in Clare as gardai target organised crime operation

GARDAÍ have arrested six people in County Clare as part of an ongoing operation targeting suspected organised crime. As part of the operation uniform and detective Gardaí from the Clare Division arrested six people in Ennis and the West Clare area Tuesday morning, June 1. The six people, five men and one woman, are currently being detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007 at Ennis, Shannon and Kilrush Garda Stations. This organised crime group are believed to be involved in the theft of catalytic converters and the sale of the precious metals contained within. The theft of catalytic converters has been an ongoing scourge in the county over the past year, as reported at the most recent Clare Joint Policing Committee meeting in April. Outlining the crime figures for the first three months of 2021, at the JPC Chief Superintendent Seán Colleran noted that thefts from MPVs had more than doubled on the same period last year. …

Atypical thievery in Clare as slides, traps and seats go missing

CLARE gardai are appealing for assistance in solving some unusual petty crime in the county this week. Children’s playthings, animal traps and even seats from boats were the targets of thieves in the Banner county in the past seven days. The latter incident also saw the fuel line being cut on the boat that had been moored in Scariff Harbour. The vandalism occurred between 5pm on May 26 and 2pm the following day. In Ballina meanwhile, a very brief window was identified for the theft of a 12-foot red plastic wavy slide. The children’s plaything was stolen from a garden Lakeview Heights between 11.45am and 12.15pm on Friday, May 28. In the north of the county meanwhile, five traps that were laid on lands at Lackamore, Lahinch as part of a disease eradication program being carried out by the Department of Agriculture were stolen. Facebook puppy scam takes in Clare woman

THE dangers of commerce on Facebook were brought into focus this week with Clare people falling foul of scams. A woman in Kilrush made contact with a man that was selling puppies on the social media platform. A conversation took place between them on Messenger and the man asked the woman to get €100 in Pay Safe cards and send him the codes, which she did. He then said that a pet delivery company would deliver the puppy, but required another €20 another Pay Safe card for this. She duly sent him the code for this card. She got suspicious when he wanted more money and then realised that it was a scam and while she was able to cancel the €20 card, she could not cancel the one for €100. Another woman, this time in Ennis, suffered an even greater loss when attempting to buy a phone of a seller on Facebook. She paid €1,000 for a phone from …

Major player in Clare drugs trade gets 12-year sentence

A “MAJOR PLAYER” and man at the “top” of the Clare drugs trade is this week beginning a 12-year prison sentence, writes Ronan Judge. At Ennis Circuit Court, Judge Brian O’Callaghan said Tony McInerney (25) “is at the top of the pyramid in the good county of Clare and no doubt further afield”. McInerney, a father of two with a former address at Glenina, Gort Road, Ennis and originally from Dublin, emerged in recent years as a major figure in the Clare drugs trade and became an “operational target” for gardaí, the court heard. Judge O’Callaghan imposed sentences totalling 14 years for drugs and proceeds of crime offences and suspended the final two years The sentence is one of the longest handed down by the courts in Clare in recent years. The judge said the drug “pandemic” in Ireland “has long pre-dated Covid”. He said the court has “absolutely no doubt whatsoever” that the activities of the accused have done …

Man charged over major cash seizure in Clare’s county town

GARDAÍ have arrested and charged a man in relation to the seizure of almost €37,000 in cash in Ennis on May 4. As part of an ongoing operation targeting criminal activity in the county, Gardaí from the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit stopped a car on the Drumbiggle Road, Ennis, at around 8.30pm. Gardaí carried out a search of the vehicle and discovered nearly €37,000 in cash that was wrapped in cling film. A man, aged in his late teens, was arrested at the scene and brought to Ennis Garda Station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. He has since been charged and is due to appear before Ennis District Court this evening.

Clare woman falls victim to ‘Amazon’ scam

A CLARE woman was scammed out of “considerable” amounts of money from her bank account after being targeted in a telephone fraud. Gardaí in Clare are investigating after the woman, who lives in the north of the county, was repeatedly contacted by the scammer who had claimed to be working for Amazon. The woman received an automated call which told her that she was due a refund for a subscription to Amazon Prime of €79.99 which she had not authorised for a period of months. She was instructed to press 1 and she was then transferred to the scammer who posed as a staff member. According to Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Triona Brooks, “The male on the phone who had a foreign accent gave her the name of Michael. “He requested that she log onto her Amazon Account which she did and she gave him her email address, user ID and password giving him access to all of her information. …
