Facebook puppy scam takes in Clare woman

THE dangers of commerce on Facebook were brought into focus this week with Clare people falling foul of scams.
A woman in Kilrush made contact with a man that was selling puppies on the social media platform.
A conversation took place between them on Messenger and the man asked the woman to get €100 in Pay Safe cards and send him the codes, which she did.
He then said that a pet delivery company would deliver the puppy, but required another €20 another Pay Safe card for this. She duly sent him the code for this card.
She got suspicious when he wanted more money and then realised that it was a scam and while she was able to cancel the €20 card, she could not cancel the one for €100.
Another woman, this time in Ennis, suffered an even greater loss when attempting to buy a phone of a seller on Facebook.
She paid €1,000 for a phone from what she thought was a business selling phones, but unfortunately this was another scam.
Members of the public are urged to take great care when buying things from Facebook pages as not all sellers are genuine.
