A new multinational interpretation of Mullach Mòr

Scottish artist, Keith McIntyre, will take centre stage at this year’s Burren Annual Exhibition which takes place at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan later this month. Mr McIntyre’s work involves exploring coastal geological phenomena through mural scale drawing, print, performance and film. The title of this year’s exhibition is ‘Mullach Mòr: elephant rocks, drinking dragons and other geo phenomena. Mullach Mòr translated from Irish Gaelic means the big rock. However, in Scots Gaelic, a similar word Moladh translates as ‘in praise of’ and prefixes the place or person to be eulogised in a poem or song. While in Manx Gaelic the word is Mollyee. In his first solo exhibition in Ireland, McIntyre will continue his interest in geology that has developed a significant cultural presence in the landscape through a collective community imagining. Work presented will include the Elephant Rocks from Northumbria, the Vestmannaevjar Islands in Iceland and the Drinking Dragon from the Isle of Man. Keith McIntyre …

A Burren return for Gerrit Van Gelderen

Rare footage recorded in the Burren by legendary RTÉ documentary filmmaker, Gerrit Van Gelderen, in the 1960s, 70s and 80s will be shown to the public for the very first time at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan this Friday, April 5. The footage was recorded by Van Gelderen while shooting episodes of his seminal nature programme, To The Waters And The Wild, in North Clare. The previously unseen footage has been compiled over the last number of weeks by Gerrit’s filmmaker son, Finn, to commemorate the 30 years since his father’s passing. “The film contains footage that was recorded in the Burren from as far back as the 1960s. The theme of the film is to commemorate 30 years since his father’s passing and to share tales about him,” said Ballyvaughan woman and friend of the Van Gelderens, Eilís Haden-Storrie. “Gerrit was the first documentary film maker in RTÉ, in fact, he started as a graphic designer on …

Making the Burren ‘a learning landscape’

INTEREST groups have gathered this weekend, to discuss how the Burren’s potential as a ‘learning landscape’ might be developed. A study exploring this potential, commissioned last year by Burrenbeo Trust,  was launched at the  Burren College of Art earlier in the week. “The Burren is Ireland’s greatest outdoor classroom. While all places have a potential for learning, the Burren has that potential in abundance, thanks to the wealth and accessibility of its geology, flora, fauna, archaeology, history and culture. For many years, the Burren has been the destination of choice for school tours and university outings but its potential as a learning destination of international renown remains largely untapped,” said Dr Brendan Dunford of Burrenbeo Trust. “The Burren’s pioneering initiatives in conservation farming, volunteering, place-based learning and ecotourism represent best-practice models of sustainable land use in our nation today and offer fascinating insights and experiences to other regions. With an excellent network of product and service providers – from accommodation to …
