Culture Night is set to light up Clare this Friday, September 20, with almost 50 events showcasing a diverse range of cultural offerings across the county. From traditional music and dance to art exhibitions, concerts, and poetry readings, there is something for everyone to enjoy on this special night of community and creativity. In Tulla, attendees can enjoy a number of events including traditional music and dance performances, alongside art and photography exhibitions. Mountshannon promises a magical evening, uniting the community through a special concert and by a candle-lit walk. Broadford, Killaloe and Scarriff will also host events in East Clare. TWO contemporary Clare musicians are set to collaborate with their musical heroes from times past as part of an innovative new project which will premiere on Culture Night this September. The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) and the Arts Office of Clare County Council have announced that the second Duala: Creator-in-Residence Scheme has been awarded to joint applicants Tara Breen and Nuala Kennedy. The pair have been working on Ag Lorg Ár Líne – Clare Women: Listening and Performing will premiere online on Friday, September 17, as part of Culture Night 2021. They have been listening deeply to archival recordings of their female predecessors, and are attempting to ‘collaborate remotely’ across time and space with some of their County Clare musical foremothers: Kitty Hayes, song/concertina; Nell Galvin, fiddle; Mary Haren, concertina; and singer Nora Cleary. Clare County Council’s Arts Office has announced of a four-year public art programme, entitled ‘Gaining Ground’. The aim of the council’s Public Art Programme 2017-2020 will be to utilise the pooled resources of the Per Cent for Art Schemes of the Local Authority and the Office of Public Works to maximise their potential. The programme comprises four strands taking place in North and West Clare, Shannon and Ennis. In North Clare, four six-month residency projects will be selected to take place over a two-year timeframe. A single residency project, entitled ‘Re-imagining the Rural’, will be selected to take place over a one-year timeframe in West Clare. A single project, entitled ‘Dancing Together’ will be selected to take place over a one-year timeframe in Shannon. ‘Reflections’, meanwhile, is the title of a publication and symposium in Ennis from 2019 to 2020.
