Soccer Sisters pitch in to raise €5,000 for Rape Crisis Midwest

THE Soccer Sisters, a social soccer club in Ennis, came out in force for Rape Crisis Midwest recently.

The club organised a Charity Soccer Blitz featuring several teams from across County Clare raising €5,000.

The club, which has a large membership of women, is a relatively newly established soccer team and community is at the heart of the club.

The teams took part in a Round Robin type tournament at the astro turf at Planet Entertainment, Ennis, last Saturday week, July 2.

It was very much a family affair with children, parents and partners joining in to support the players, to hand out food and refreshments and to present the prizes.

The winning team was Bunratty Cratloe with Bridge Celtic FC in second position and the hosts Soccer Sisters finishing third.

Laura Thompson of Soccer Sister explained, “Fifty-seven fantastic women took part on the day, 46 matches over six hours. I would like to thank the coaches, referees and volunteers who helped make the day such a success, a special thanks to Planet Entertainment for providing the venue on the day.”

Fundraising for the event came from a number of sources including entry fee for the blitz, a raffle and a special raffle of a signed Clare Jersey.

Verena Tarpey, Rape Crisis Midwest commented, “We are delighted to be associated with this event.

“The event is very much a community effort embracing fitness, good health, camaraderie and raising awareness of the work of Rape Crisis Midwest.

“The work that we do for men and women across County Clare often goes under the radar, so well done to this remarkable group of women for putting themselves on the line playing soccer for six hours.”

Rape Crisis Midwest is located at Tracklands Business Park in Ennis and provides supports and services to men and women who have survived any form of sexual violence across County Clare.
