Corn Uí Mhuiri (Munster Under 19A PPS Football Championship) Round 1
St Francis Rochestown (Cork) 3-12 St Flannan’s College 1-08
By Derek Dormer in Knocklong
A difficult start to this year’s Corn Uí Mhuiri for St Flannan’s College after being kept at arm’s length by St Francis Rochestown in Knocklong on Wednesday afternoon.
Playing up an incline and facing into a strong wind, the Ennis school had to play second fiddle for the majority of the opening half. It was the Cork school who tore out of the starting blocks and raided for an opening salvo of 1-1 inside two minutes with wing-forward Ben Delaney coolly slotting home after a clever pass from midfielder Sean Denn. A fine Harry Doherty point from play opened the Flannan’s account in the fourth minute but two fine points from corner-forward Padraig McGrath had the rebel school five to the good at the end of the opening quarter.
A Dara O’Sullivan converted placed ball extended the lead and with only 20 minutes played, the writing seemed on the wall for the Gary Brennan coached outfit. St Flannan’s badly needed something and talisman Harry Doherty certainly delivered. Gathering possession just inside his own half Doherty blazed a trail past several players before shrugging off would be challengers with consummate ease before magnificently blasting low to the corner of the net with the outside of his left boot. A truly individual piece of brilliance that saw the deficit reduced to just two points.
With the wind to come for the second period the Ennis school suddenly seemed in a relatively strong position. The closing four minutes though effectively won this tie for the Cork school as they raided for a closing 1-4 without reply. A sublime Ben Delaney point from distance ignited the charge and with virtually the last kick of the half, St Francis netted once more after the ball was overturned from a poor restart with centre-forward Ronan Daly feeding Dara O’Sullivan for the easiest of finishes. O’Sullivan’s 31st minute green flag ensured an interval lead of nine for the Cork school.
The Clare side did have the elements to come and would have been looking for a fast start to the second half. However it was their opponents who through the hugely impressive Ben Delaney that started better once more, kicking the first two scores to extend the lead to eleven points.
Showing great character and no little heart Flannans refused to lie down. Inspired by Doherty, they kicked five of the next six points. Moving the ball faster with an emphasis on feeding their inside line seemed to work as Rochestown were pinned back.
Gary Brennan’s charges needed a green flag though and although they began to dominate the middle third, the Cork defence stood firm. Sometimes there was an element of cynicism to their defending but holding such a lead one can understand their attitude of not conceding a goal no matter what. Flannan’s introduced both Fionn O’Leary and Paul O’Connell to the fray and both had an impact. Pushing hard for the goal that was desperately needed, the Ennis school were caught on the break and substitute Jack O’Brien had the final say when his effort was unfortunately from a Flannans point of view deflected to the net with referee Johnny Murphy blowing for full-time immediately after.
Overall a valiant effort by the Ennis school but an over reliability on Harry Doherty for scores along with some defensive lapses ultimately proved costly as they suffer a ten point defeat.

Dr. Harty Cup (Munster Under 19A PPS Hurling Championship) Round 1
Blackwater Community School, Lismore (Waterford) 2-16 St Joseph’s Tulla 0-20
By Tom Clancy in Kilmallock
St Joseph’s Tulla suffered an agonising two-point reverse in their Harty Cup Group 3 campaign in Kilmallock. The defat, at the hands of a pacy Blackwater Community School from Lismore, leaves them under pressure to advance to the knockout stages.
For all that Tulla did well in this contest, a sloppy start proved detrimental to their chances, falling eight points behind inside the opening quarter. It was a position that the students, coached by Terence Fahy, Aidan Harte and Tomás Kelly couldn’t recover from fully.
Even when they were on top and looked like taking the lead, they were hit with a sucker-punch of a goal that filled the Lismore confidence heading into the second half. Indeed, a stunning save from Billy Murphy in the Lismore goal denied them a potential game changing goal, with Darragh White having to settle for a point instead.
The sluggish opening saw Lismore profit with an opening minute goal. The early score from Cathal Culloo quickly forgotten when Jack Twomey benefited from some hesitant defending to pull to the net.
There was a 1-8 to 0-3 gap by the 15th minute. With Jerry O’Connor and Matthew Corbett on target at one end, there was an accurate avalanche from the Waterford side. Ben Cummins, Joseph McDonnell and James Hickey were all on target – the Waterford men didn’t miss a shot until 18 minutes into this frantic contest.
The winners played with an extra defender, something which cut the supply to Aodhan O’Driscoll and Liam Murphy. However, the avenue of frees, from Corbett, cut the gap. There was a run of six Tulla scores on the trot, including four frees from the Clooney-Quin man, while Murphy (O’Callaghan’s Mills) and O’Driscoll (Broadford) delivering from play.
However, a goal late in the half from Stephen Murphy stifled the momentum built up by Tulla. He pounced on a ricochet, snapped the ball and powered to the net. There was a gap of 2-10 to 0-12 at half-time, though there was initial disagreement on the score. With both sides wearing all white jerseys, it is highly possible that there was an error along the way.
Upon the resumption, there was a shortage of scores from play in the second half from Tulla. The reliance on frees from Corbett and later O’Connor meant they never got closer than two points. At the other end, Ben Cummins nailed his frees, with only a single point for Lismore coming from play during the second half.
The turning point was the aforementioned save of Darragh White’s shot. He volleyed on a ball from close range which Billy Murphy somehow deflected over the crossbar.
Tulla cut the gap back to two entering stoppage time, but couldn’t forge their way through a packed Waterford defence to try to snatch the win.
Subsequent clashes with Cashel CS and Scoil Na mBraithre, Charleville will determine if St Joseph’s can recover and progress to the knock-out phase.

Dr. Harty Cup (Munster Under 19A PPS Hurling Championship) Round 1
St Flannan’s College 0-21 Thurles CBS (Tipperary) 0-21
By Derek Dormer in Cappamore
A thrilling spectacle saw both schools enjoy spells of dominance but overall the Ennis school were rather unfortunate not to claim the victory after holding deserved a four point advantage with the clock ticking down.
Leading 2-21 to 1-20 after a super Paul O’Connell white flag, the points seemed destined for the Tony Kelly coached school. Thurles had other ideas though and in the first minute of additional time they were awarded a 20 metre free. Up stepped their most potent attacking player, wing-forward Cormac Fitzpatrick, to fire low past goalkeeper Michael Ó Coileáin. Sixty seconds later centre-back Euan Murray fired over the leveller with referee Johnny Murphy’s full time whistle immediately following.
The first half saw the Tipperary school raid for an early and extremely fortunate major when an attempt by the Flannan’s rearguard to clear their lines rebounded off corner-forward Jack Hayes and trickle over the line. They didn’t panic though and some fine points from Ronan Kilroy and a Daniel Costelloe beauty reduced the arrears to just a two point interval deficit. The Ennis school would have been relatively happy at this juncture as they had played into a stiff wind while their defending in particular was top notch.
Under immense pressure for lengthy periods of that opening thirty minutes, the Ennis school dealt with a wave of Thurles attacks with a fierce but disciplined determination. Indeed such was their impeccable timing in the tackle they didn’t concede a scoring free until the 23rd minute. At the break last year’s semi finalists Thurles led 1-11 to 0-12.
When play resumed the Tipperary side extended the lead to three before Flannans took over completely. Raiding for 1-4 in a glorious three minute scoring blitz had them four to the good by the end of the third quarter. The goal was a strike of sheer class as Conor Ralph who had seen little ball up to this point gathered possession outside the 21 before swiveling onto his left and firing a rocket on the run off the hurley into the roof of the net. Incredibly though Thurles came roaring back into the tie landing six of the next eight points to level at 1-18 apiece with eight to play.
A super catch and execution by Harry Doherty restored their lead before Ralph’s second major seemed to have secured the victory. This time Ralph was the benefactor of some terrific work by Ronan Kilroy who overturned posession and released James O’Dwyer with only the keeper to beat. However his effort was superbly stopped by Harry Loughnane but Ralph was on hand to pull first time to the net. When the hugely impressive Kilroy fired over it looked for all the world that the job was done. That is until Fitzpatrick’s ice cool twenty one and Murray’s late late leveller.
Overall a high quality game that was hugely entertaining but when all is said and done Flannans will probably feel they should have held on for what would have ultimately been a deserved victory.

Dean Ryan Cup (Munster Under 17A PPS Hurling Championship) Round 1
St Flannan’s College 0-24 St Colman’s Fermoy (Cork) 2-16
What a game to open this year’s Dean Ryan competition. Clare versus Cork in any capacity never fails to deliver and both schools deserve huge credit for delivering a quality spectacle with the result in doubt right up until virtually the last puck. In the end the Brendan Bugler managed outfit showed real desire and hunger for battle when landing the last three points to come from behind and snatch victory.
This was a real see-saw battle with both schools having different periods of dominance. It was the Ennis school who tore out of the starting blocks and raced into an opening quarter lead of four on a 0-6 to 0-2 scoreline with Ballyea’s Dara Kennedy landing some early frees. The second quarter saw nine scores in total but crucially for the Cork side two goals, both quality finishes had Flannans in trouble approaching the break. They didn’t panic though and a brace of points ensured there was very little to separate the teams at the break with Butler’s troops ahead by the minimum on a 0-11 to 2-4 scoreline.
The action didn’t let up in the third quarter with the Flannans defence being tested. St.Colman’s were definitely in the ascendancy but crucially for the Ennis school they managed to stay in touch. It didn’t look like it was going to be their day though as they trailed 2-16 to 0-21 with time almost up. Once more they rallied superbly with a brace of points before substitute Leon Talty coolly fired over a peach with virtually the last puck of an enthralling contest.
