Today, Senator Roisin Garvey announced her candidacy for the position of Deputy Leader of The
Green Party, expressing her commitment to the party’s mission and values.
In a statement made earlier, Senator Garvey emphasized the importance of addressing the ongoing
environmental challenges. “With the need for a new Deputy Leader of our party, I feel it is my time
to stand up and go for the position. I am committed and passionate about the party and its ideals.”
Garvey stated: “We all know that we have both a nature and a climate crisis, and I know our land
and people will see more and more effects of these crises on them this summer and every year, both
personally and financially. Just look at what happened in Middleton and the challenges to our food
security as we are now seeing around our potato supplies.”
Senator Garvey stressed the significant role The Green Party must play in mitigating the impacts of
these crises: “I believe we as a party have the knowledge and passion needed to help protect our
people, nature, and our environment from these effects, but I am convinced I can help communicate
this in a better and more effective way. I want to help make that happen.”
A long-time advocate for community empowerment, bottom up sustainable and resilient
communities and social justice, Senator Garvey has been a notable voice in the Seanad, supporting
policies aimed at addressing climate change, promoting renewable energy, and protecting natural
habitats. Her experience both as an activist outside of politics and her role as Spokesperson for Rural
Development and Enterprise, Trade and Employment, positions her as a strong candidate for the
Deputy Leader role. She is popular among the membership for her straight talking and has a keen
sense of humour.
“I am running for Deputy Leader to ensure that our party continues to prioritize environmental
protection and climate action. Together, we can work towards a sustainable future,” Garvey
concluded.
The Green Party will hold internal elections for the Deputy Leader position on Saturday July 13th.
Members of the party are encouraged to participate and support the candidate who best represents
their vision for a sustainable and equitable future.
