Caravan park upgrade touted as parking solution

A proposal to upgrade an existing caravan park in Kinvara, which was recently given the go-ahead by Galway County Council, could help end the illegal parking problem in the seaside village a public representative has claimed.

John and Catherine O’Connor applied for permission in June to upgrade an existing caravan park at Traught beach including building a utility building and a new waste water treatment system as well as constructing an access road.
Earlier this month Galway County Council granted permission for the development subject to 15 conditions.

East Galway senator Lorraine Higgins said she believes that the project will help end difficulties in the area with illegal camping.

Senator Higgins had previously called for a new or enlarged caravan park in Kinvara to expand the area’s tourist potential and end local residents’ concerns over illegal parking in the village.
“Camping holidays are becoming more and more popular, especially for families, and I feel that Kinvara will now benefit greatly from this news,” said Senator Higgins.

“This news will go some way towards addressing residents concerns about campervans parking in the town, particularly during the town’s two festival weekends, Fleadh na gCuach in May and Cruinniu na mBád in August,” she went on.

“The upgrade of the existing park provides the solution to the problem as this will prevent illegal parking in the town’s main streets and along by the pier at night-time,” said Senator Higgins.
The council’s conditions include a stipulation that no caravans, mobile homes or tents shall be stored or placed on the site between October and May inclusive and that it should serve no more than 30 units.
