This Scariff/Ogonnelloe team had been the main crest of the rising tide that has swept through both clubs in recent years. However, after cutting their teeth at B level up along, it was a blossoming achievement for the amalgamation to finally secure a first prestigious Under 21A title according to manager Conor McNamara.
“I think Mark [Rodgers] mentioned in his speech there that this is the fruit of years and years of hard work in both clubs. There’s trojan work going on and that’s very important because at the end of the day, it’s all about preparing players for the senior grade.
“Look, it’s always sweet to win a final, we don’t win too many of them so credit has to go to the players, they are a great bunch. Everyone knows the big names we have but what people don’t realise is the not so big names and the work that they did in that first half because that’s what won us the game.”
That blistering start against the predominant wind was aided by quick fire goals through Mark Rodgers and Patrick Ryan on their way to a seven point cushion.
“The two goals and a phenomenal work-rate in the first half were crucial as we were up against a strong wind. They [Corofin-Ruan] got the goal just before half-time which brought it back a bit and we expected them to come back as it showed the champions that they are.
“But today is about Scariff/Ogonnelloe and how good our lads are. On the day we were probably the better team but that doesn’t take from Corofin/Ruan who have been great champions and deservedly so.
This year we felt that the lads had matured and that it was going to be our year and we’ll enjoy this one now.”
Coming just before Christmas as everyone makes plans for 2023 seems perfect timing for both clubs to try and build on this achievement, McNamara, son of former Clare manager Mike, noted.
“East Clare isn’t shining so bright at the minute as regards hurling but hopefully this will inject something into the community.
“One thing’s for sure, I got what I wanted early off Santa anyway.”
