Quiet glory of south Galway captured in Mavis’ exhibition

THE beautiful land and seascapes of south Galway provide the inspiration for an exhibition of paintings at the old Courthouse in Kinvara running this week.

KAVA (Kinvara & Area Visual Artists) is presenting a solo exhibition of Mavis Gormally’s paintings entitled, Path to Home, that will be available to view up to Sunday, July 24.

Mavis is showing over 40 paintings depicting the idyllic landscapes, heritage sites and seascape scenes of Gort, Kinvara, and the surrounding area.

Among her subjects Mavis has captured Thor Ballylee, The Gort River Walk, Coole Park, and the Pier in Kinvara.

Since before moving from NYC to Ireland in 2003, Mavis has shared her knowledge and love for art.

A fine artist and painting tutor, Mavis enjoys sharing her passion for art through teaching painting in the locality.

She currently tutors pre-teens, teenagers, and adults in her home studio as well as clients of the Gort Cancer Support Centre in Holly Blue House.

The artist has found great inspiration for her subject matter in the rural surroundings. Though it was a difficult time during the pandemic, Mavis says she is grateful to have enjoyed a close relationship to this rustic and diverse land.

Painting these works deepened her connection with South Galway in a whole new way.

She realised the action of painting enhanced her intimate appreciation of the area and the act of standing before these scenes and painting them gave the artist a true sense of ‘home’ that has eluded her since she left New York.

Her intention with this collection is to share her vision of these amazing local gems so that others may gain a sense of place and feel comforted by the landscapes and seascapes in these trying times.

Mavis’ new works are available to view on her website@www.mavisgormally.com where you can also sign up for her email letters which describe her artwork and her journey.
There will be a talk by the artist on Saturday July 23 at 12 noon and Q & A on site.
