Ballyea hold Éire Óg defence at bay

BALLYEA deservedly booked a place in the semi-final of the U-21A Hurling Championship and a meeting with Clonlara, having accounted for Éire Óg in a hard-fought tie at Corofin on Sunday.The Ennis side have reason to rue a number of missed chances but they failed to match the all-round balance and hunger of their opponents.The game started at a great pace with the play swinging from end to end but both sides failed to avail of good scoring chances in the opening quarter at the end of which each side had managed just one point. Kilmaley and Newmarket must meet again to determine who will go through to play Sixmilebridge in the semi-final of the U-21A Hurling Championship after they ended on level terms on Sunday.Having won the minor A title three years ago, Kilmaley went into this tie with high hopes to progressing.The game was played in Meelick after the original venue, Gurteen was ruled out on Friday.An early goal from Daire Keane gave Kilmaley the upper hand and they went on to lead by eight points after 20 minutes, 1-7 to 0-2, points having been added to Keane’s goal by Michael O’Neill (4), Aidan McGuane, Eoin Enright and Keane.The fact that Kilmaley managed only two points in the final 40 minutes is sure to be a concern to their mentors. Crusheen win in high scoring tie

  Crusheen 8-16   Corofin 2-19 In a high scoring U-21B Championship tie at Clareabbey on Saturday evening, Crusheen overcame the challenge of Corofin to secure a quarter-final date against Tulla-Bodyke this week.One of the highlights of this tie was the contribution of 5-2 from Colin Vaughan, who scored a hat trick of goals in the opening half, at the end of which Crusheen were 4-10 to 2-13 ahead.Conor O’Donnell, Jamie Fitzgibbon and Ethan O’Donnell were the other goal scorers for the winners.Stephen Heagney was Corofin’s top scorer with 0-11 of his side’s final tally while Liam Corbett contributed both of their goals.Overall, however, Crusheen were more evenly balanced and they punished weaknesses in the Corofin defence as their final tally confirms.   Feakle-Killanena 9-22   Scariff-Ogonnelloe 4-10 Last year’s beaten finalists Feakle-Killanena served notice of their intentions when the U-21C Hurling Championship got underway on Saturday as they proved too strong for Scariff-Ogonnelloe at Bodyke. In the highest scoring tie of the weekend, they proved too strong for their neighbours and deservingly booked a place in the semi-final.Owen McMahon and Cillian Bane each scored 2-4 with Oisin Donnellan adding 2-2 for the winners, who were well on their way to the next round when they led 6-11 to 1-5 at half time.
