Overall award for Burren

BURREN Tug of War Club were the overall winners in both the novice and the lightweights in the Munster Tug of War League.Round eight, the final round, was held on Sunday in Aghern hosted by the Harps Club.Here, the Burren shone out to take the novice section in the 640kg against Araglen by 2-0, to take the Harps Perpetual Cup.In the senior section, Burren just got piped in the semi-finals by Ballyhooly by 2-1. Considering that Burren are only a 600kg team, they did very well up against heavier and more experience teams of senior class. Glenhill went on to beat Ballyhooly in the final 2-0, to take the Harps Perpetual Cup.Overall, Burren won this senior section of the league as they had more points over the eight rounds, 33 to 26 for Glenhill. They now go forward to compete in the Munster Championships this Sunday in 630kg at the Inishannon Vintage & Steam Rally in Cork.

Shannon progress in Pierce Purcell Shield

SHANNON will represent Clare in the North Munster final of the Pierce Purcell Shield after they emerged victorious from the weekend’s competition at Kilkee. In the final, they will face Charleville, who were winners at Adare at the weekend and the game will take place next week.In their first outing, Shannon accounted for the defending All-Ireland champions Woodstock on a 3-2 scoreline, a result which saw them progress to the semi-final on Sunday morning.Other winners on Saturday were Ennis who accounted for Lahinch by 3 ½ to 1 ½, Spanish Point who beat Doonbeg 4-1 and Kilkee, who beat Dromoland Castle by 3 ½ to 1 ½. Following their win over Lahinch, Ennis went on to beat Kilrush by 4-1 on Saturday afternoonIn Sunday morning’s semi-finals, Spanish Point were 4-1 winners over Ennis, while Shannon were 3-2 winners over Kilkee. Clare Community Games had many successes at the national finals in Athlone at the weekend. A total of 143 children from 25 areas in Clare took part in a wide variety of sporting and cultural events. These included art, model making, talent, handwriting, table quiz, cross country, projects, indoor soccer, chess, choir and handball.
