Replay for Kilmaley and Newmarket

Car Tourismo Banner

Kilmaley and Newmarket must meet again to determine who will go through to play Sixmilebridge in the semi-final of the U-21A Hurling Championship after they ended on level terms on Sunday.
Having won the minor A title three years ago, Kilmaley went into this tie with high hopes to progressing.
The game was played in Meelick after the original venue, Gurteen was ruled out on Friday.
An early goal from Daire Keane gave Kilmaley the upper hand and they went on to lead by eight points after 20 minutes, 1-7 to 0-2, points having been added to Keane’s goal by Michael O’Neill (4), Aidan McGuane, Eoin Enright and Keane.
The fact that Kilmaley managed only two points in the final 40 minutes is sure to be a concern to their mentors. The blues finished the half strongly with points from Liam Clancy, Shane Liddy and Paudie Hayes while the switch of Sean O’Connor to mark Keane also helped Newmarket’s cause. It was 1-7 to 0-6 at half time and by the fifth minutes of the second half the sides were level with Liam Clancy hitting some good scores from placed balls for Newmarket
Newmarket dominated the third quarter and fought back strongly but the Kilmaley defence held firm. Michael O’Neill scored his fifth point when he put Kilmaley back in front from a 60m free and this was followed by a Cillian McNamara point but they failed to add to this and Newmarket finished with points from Clancy and Ian Cusack to leave the teams deadlocked at the final whistle.
Both sides had chances to snatch victory with the final chance falling to Kilmaley but Daire Keane failed to find the target from a 50m free.
The replay has been fixed for Saturday week in Clarecastle, a decision that is likely to please the U-21 football management ahead of their Munster semi-final date with Cork next Wednesday given that two members of the Kilmaley team, Martin O’Connor and Enda Finnucane, are in the football team.
