A passenger flight from the United States to Europe diverted to Shannon Airport this morning after a cabin crew member was reported to have fallen ill. United Airlines flight UA-74 was travelling from Newark in New Jersey to Frankfurt, Germany at the time. There were 175 passengers and crew on board. At around 8.30am, when the Boeing 767-300 series jet was about 500 kilometres southwest of Shannon, the flight advised air traffic controllers that a member of the cabin crew had fallen ill. At the time, the flight crew was in contact with controllers at the Irish Aviation Authority’s North Atlantic Communications Centre at Ballygirreen in Co Clare. The crew advised controllers that they wished to divert to Shannon and requested emergency medical services to be alerted and placed on standby. UNITED Airlines has announced it will operate a new daily non-stop seasonal service from Chicago to Shannon from next summer. The new service will commence on May 26 2023, departing Shannon daily at 9:30am on a Boeing 757-200 aircraft for Chicago O’Hare International Airport, a major US hub. A transatlantic passenger jet made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport yesterday evening after the crew reported “fumes in the cabin.” United Airlines flight UA-941 was travelling from Heathrow Airport in London to Newark, New Jersey in the United States at the time. There were 171 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 767-300(ER) jet. At around 5.30pm, while the flight was about 100 kms northwest of Mayo, the flight crew declared an emergency and advised air traffic controllers they wished the divert to Shannon Airport. The crew had been in contact with the airline’s dispatch centre to discuss a course of action for the emergency divert. It was decided that Shannon was the best option for the aircraft to divert to. A TRANSATLANTIC jet has made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport after suffering an engine problem off the south coast this morning. This is the second time in less than a fortnight that a United Airlines flight travelling from the U.S. to Europe was forced to make an emergency diversion to Shannon. This morning, a United Airlines flight UA-52 was travelling from Washington in the United States to Zurich, Switzerland with 126 passengers and crew on board. Shortly after 5am, as the Boeing 767-300 jet was passing south of Ireland, the crew declared an emergency reporting an issue with the aircraft’s left engine. As the flight was rerouting towards Shannon, emergency procedures were being implemented at the airport. United Airlines has resumed its daily nonstop seasonal service between Shannon and New York/Newark for the first time since October 2019. The service is set to operate until October 29 2022 and departs daily at 12.30pm. A US bound flight turned around over the Atlantic yesterday afternoon and diverted to Shannon Airport after a passenger on board fell ill. United Airlines flight UA-914 was travelling from Paris to Washington and was about 600 kilometres west of the Ireland when the crew declared a medical emergency and sought clearance from air traffic controllers to divert to Shannon. The Boeing 777-200 jet landed at 3.40pm and was met at the terminal by HSE ambulance paramedics. The patient was assessed and stabilised at the scene for being removed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. Flight 914 continued its journey a shor time later.
