TULLA Athletics Club has suggested creating a rule that its members “will not walk” to its new proposed training facility and travel to training by car, according to planning documents submitted to Clare County Council. The proposal was made by the club regarding the athletics club’s application for a new training facility at Creamery Road in Tulla, after the council expressed concern about road safety at the proposed site. The application, which was submitted by Eugene Conlon, secretary of Tulla Athletics Club, proposes to construct an athletics training facility at Creamery Road in Tulla. The development, if granted, would include an all-weather running track with area lighting, a cross-country running track and a building incorporating a large indoor training area, public toilets, dressing rooms and club rooms. In addition, it would include an effluent treatment system, new entrance from the public road, all with associated site works. By Seamus Hayes St. Josephs, Tulla 1-16 CBC, Cork 1-14 (after extra time) A thirty four year gap was bridged at Ballyagran on Saturday when St. Josephs, Tulla won the Munster colleges senior B hurling title for only the second time in their history. In difficult conditions the East Clare side put in a tremendous performance to overcome Christian Brothers College from Cork in a tie which required extra time to separate the sides. The Cork side got off to a great start and were five points clear after just eleven minutes, 1-3 to 0-1 and things didn’t look good for Tulla. However, thanks to the accuracy of freetaker Brian Fahy, they fought back and drew level by the twenty second minute at 0-6 to 1-3 before the Cork side went on to hold a two point advantage, 1-6 to 0-7, at the interval. A HUGE East Clare will journey to Ballyagran this Saturday for the Munster Colleges Senior B Hurling Championship final, in which St Joseph’s, Tulla will face CBC from Cork at 3pm. Beaten finalists in 2013, Tulla reached the quarter-final last year where they lost out to Newport, who were then beaten in the semi-final. In the 2013 final, the East Clare side were unlucky to go out to Dungarvan CBS at Golden after extra time. The majority of that Dungarvan side were part of the Waterford colleges side that won the Harty Cup title that same year. This season’s captain, Evan McMahon, along with his Feakle clubmates, Con Smith, Stephen Conway and Martin Daly, and Broadford’s Darren Chaplin, played in that final and they will be hoping that the experience they have gained in the past two campaigns will be a key factor in helping them to get over the line this week. By Seamus Hayes St. Josephs, Tulla 0-12 Colaiste Chriost Ri, Cork 0-10 St. Josephs Tulla edged a step closer to the Munster colleges senior B hurling title when they accounted for Colaiste Chriost Ri, Cork in this semi-final replay at Ballyagran on Saturday afternoon. In much improved weather conditions from the previous week, the Clare side deserved their narrow win but the result was in doubt right to the final whistle. While Chriost Ri were first to score, Tulla enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and deservingly led by four points, 0-5 to 0-1, after twenty minutes. They failed to build on this, however and when the half time whistle sounded the margin was down to the minimum with Tulla 0-5 to 0-4 in front. Chriost Ri continued to pile on the pressure on the resumption and pointed twice inside five minutes to move one clear. By Seamus Hayes St.Josephs Tulla 0-15 Colaiste Chriost Ri 2-9 St. Josephs Tulla and Colaiste Chriost Ri, Cork will have to do it all again after they ended level in the Munster colleges senior B hurling championship semi-final at Ballyagran on Saturday afternoon. On a day when there was some excellent hurling, extra time failed to separate the teams While both sides can point to missed opportunities, a draw was a fair outcome to a contest played in extremely difficult weather conditions. Players had to contend with showers of sleet, a tricky wind and biting cold. Indeed, five minutes into the second half, referee Richard Moloney, rightly, suspended play during a heavy shower of hailstones. After a five minute delay the game resumed and huge credit must go to all involved for the marvellous entertainment provided. The Cork side made the better start and raced into a six point lead, 1-3 to 0-0, by the end of the first quarter. …

A man who had been arrested following a shooting incident in Tulla on Wednesday morning has been released and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. A 39-year-old man remains in hospital, as gardaí are investigate the circumstances in which a legally held double-barrel shotgun was discharged into his  leg in a private house in Tulla. It is understood that the incident took place at approximately 2am, when gardaí and emergency services were called to the house. An injured man was removed from the house by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick (UHL). Gardaí confirmed that the two men were in the house at the time and had been socialising when the legally held firearm was discharged, wounding the 39-year-old.

  St Joseph’s Tulla 1-11; Causeway, Kerry 0-12 St Joseph’s Tulla progressed to the Munster colleges Senior B hurling championship semi-final and a meeting with Coláiste Chríost Rí from Cork, when they overcame the strong challenge presented by a fancied Causeway Community School from Kerry,  in Rathkeale on Friday afternoon. From an early stage, it was a close affair but, in the final analysis, the Clare side were that bit better balanced and this proved decisive. The game’s only goal proved to be a crucial score and it came after just 10 minutes, when Gary Cooney’s powerful strike from the edge of the 13m line beat the Kerry defence. At half time, the winners held a two point advantage, 1-5 to 0-6, but the Kerry side will argue that Darren Chaplin’s effort, six minutes from the interval, should not have been allowed.
